August is Back-to-School Month – Let’s Prioritize Safety. As risk managers, we understand the importance of proactive planning to reduce risks and protect our communities. With students returning to classrooms across Texas, now is the time for public agencies, schools, and local partners to review and implement back-to-school safety protocols. Back-to-School Safety Checklist Highlights: ✔️Pedestrian Safety: Use crosswalks, look both ways, and follow crossing guard instructions. ✔️Bus Safety: Arrive early, wait for a complete stop, and stay seated during transit. ✔️Car Safety: Buckle up, observe school zone speed limits and stay alert for children. ✔️Bicycle Safety: Wear a properly fitted helmet and signal turns clearly. Creating a safe learning environment starts before the first bell. Collaboration among school districts, parents and government agencies is essential to minimize risks and ensure every student returns home safely. Last week, we asked what the biggest challenge is when it comes to keeping classroom locks secure and effective. The results were eye-opening: 50% of respondents said the biggest issue is staff forgetting to lock doors. This highlights a simple but critical gap in school safety: human error. Even the best safety protocols can fall short if a door is left unlocked in the moment it matters most. That’s exactly why we designed our Aegis school locks with large, unmistakable message indicators. At just a glance, a teacher can see if their door is secure or if it’s still unlocked. It takes the guesswork out of the equation and makes the lock itself a visual reminder to act. When every second counts, a clear reminder can make all the difference.
