I’ve just read the latest Rockwell study on smart manufacturing, and one stat jumped out: 61% of manufacturers plan to adopt AI for cybersecurity in the next 12 months. And I thought NOPE…. They are not ready for that. Too often, I see AI being treated like a silver bullet when the basics (asset visibility, governance, intrusion detection, remote access control, VulM, skilled teams) are still missing. Without the fundamentals, AI is just another shiny tool (word bandwagon) that is working on IT but OT is still too fragmented and different. For me, cybersecurity is the foundation for growth and transformation for smart factories. If you get it right, AI can accelerate innovation. Get it wrong, and you’re building on sand. Focus on the basics and get more budget and staff on OT Cyber … then use AI in OT to help prioritise remediation and operational resilience priorities. For the first time, cybersecurity ranks as a top external risk to smart manufacturing, second only to inflation and economic growth. This matters because the line between IT and OT is disappearing. That’s great for connectivity... but it also widens the attack surface. No longer can cybersecurity be treated as an afterthought or buried under “technology.” Today, it's a boardroom priority. What’s shifting: 1. 61% of security leaders plan to adopt AI/machine learning for cybersecurity within the next year. 2. Nearly half of manufacturers see securing converging IT/OT architecture as essential for positive progress over the next five years. 3. Cyber readiness is now a key hiring priority for skills, analysis, and risk management. In our industry, securing every asset is a performance driver.
