Sage Growth Partners recently recleased their AI in healthcare survey with 101 hospital C-suite leaders. While the group remains positive: - 83% say AI will improve clinical decisions. - 75% say it’ll cut costs. - 67% are already spending on patient care AI, 66% on admin AI The plan of action to implement remains unclear: - Only 13% have a real strategy. - 12% even trust the algorithms. - 10% are actually pushing adoption. The battle isn’t in more pilots or surveys. It’s in building trust, reliability, adoption and implementing these systems in production. AI in healthcare is moving from telling us what might happen, to doing something about it. For years, predictive AI has been the star of the show. We’ve used it to forecast readmissions, flag chronic disease risks, and estimate claim denials. These insights are valuable, but they often stop at awareness. The next frontier—Agentic AI—goes a step further: it doesn’t just predict, it acts. Imagine a system that doesn’t just warn of a likely readmission, but: Proactively schedules a follow-up within the patient’s coverage window. Triggers prescription refill requests before adherence drops. Submits prior authorization paperwork directly to payers, reducing delays. From an application architecture perspective, this leap isn’t trivial. Our healthcare systems were built around decision-support, not decision-execution. Agentic AI demands new design principles: Workflow evolution: Clinical and administrative processes must shift to accommodate autonomous actions. Safety and governance: Guardrails, audit trails, and role-based oversight become non-negotiable. Interoperability: True orchestration requires deep integration across EHRs, payer systems, and third-party services. The real challenge isn’t just building smarter models—it’s reimagining the plumbing of healthcare IT to ensure agentic systems act responsibly, transparently, and in ways that clinicians and patients can trust.
