In just a few hours, the qualifications of CTRL+Space CTF, the first European in-orbit Capture-the-Flag (CTF) organized by D-Orbit and the Mhackeroni team, with the support of the ESA Security Office and the ESA Security Cyber Centre of Excellence (SCCoE), will kick off! The qualification is an open online competition (Jeopardy-style), where teams will tackle cybersecurity challenges across categories such as cryptography, reverse engineering, radio, web security, space systems, pwn, and more. The event will run non-stop for 24 hours, from September 20, 09:00 UTC to September 21, 09:00 UTC, with registration open until the very end. The top five teams will advance to the Final Event at ESTEC (Netherlands), held alongside the 2025 Security for Space Systems (3S) Conference (November 4–6, 2025). There, they’ll take on live security challenges executed directly aboard D-Orbit’s ION Satellite Carrier, orbiting Earth in real time. 👉 Learn more about rules and registration: https://lnkd.in/ebkgbe-s #esa #ctf #spacesecurity #hacking #space #satellites

🚀 I recently came across Cybersecurity for Space: Protecting the Final Frontier by Jacob G. Oakley, published by Apress, and took some time to check it out. Even though I don’t have a deep technical background in this area, it is clear how important the topic is. The book is a strong reminder that as space becomes more accessible to governments, academia, and the private sector, cybersecurity must keep pace. Satellites and ground stations are designed for functionality first, but with growing risks from cybercriminals, hacktivists, and state actors, we need to rethink how we secure the final frontier. From small CubeSats in Low Earth Orbit to complex constellations, as an example that came to my mind, such as Starlink developed by SpaceX, Oakley highlights both the unique challenges of space systems (radiation, collisions, power limits) and the urgent need for resilient, lightweight security solutions. 🌌 Space is no longer just about rockets and payloads—it’s also about protecting critical digital infrastructure beyond our planet. I think it could be also an interesting work for the colleagues from NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency). Thanks to Mohammed Alkhayari محمد الخيَاري for shedding light on this important work. #Cybersecurity #Space #Innovation #Resilience #Future

𝗔𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼. We’re no longer asking if space systems will be targeted - but how quickly we detect and contain it. Orbit is getting crowded: around 12,000 active satellites now underpin navigation, finance, defence, and communications across Europe and beyond. The attack surface is expanding faster than many monitoring setups. Recent incidents showed how vulnerabilities at the ground–space interface can cascade across sectors. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲? → 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲: On-board anomaly detection (incl. ML) to spot spoofing/jamming effects when links degrade. → 𝗜𝗻-𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆: Dedicated monitoring as a defensive layer—only effective with interoperability, funding, and certification. → 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Threat-intel and incident sharing must mature; no single operator can secure orbit alone. → 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻, 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗻: Cybersecurity has to be engineered from requirements through end-of-life. Bottom line: Move detection closer to the spacecraft, close the collaboration gaps, and make cybersecurity a design decision - not an afterthought. #SpaceSecurity #Cybersecurity #LEO #Satcom #CriticalInfrastructure #EUspace #EUSpaceAct #NIS2 #Resilience #ENISA #ECSS #ThreatIntelligence

Mass-produced, upgradeable satellites are about to transform U.S. space power. In his latest article for Forbes, SpiderOak Chairman Charles Beames highlights how the Space Development Agency’s upcoming launch of 21 communication satellites marks a radical shift in affordability, scalability, and resiliency for the #SpaceForce. As military operations move into a dynamic low-earth orbit regime, one thing is clear: the #futureofspace defense depends not only on speed and scale, but also on secure, trusted communications across these new architectures. At SpiderOak, that’s the problem we’re solving—building #zerotrust, space-ready #cybersecurity to ensure the integrity and end to end protection of #missioncritical data.
