GPT-5: A Digital Mirror or a Threat to Humanity?

GPT-5 does not have personality, is not a PhD, and does not talk like a person. This is all marketing language, designed to give you a mental model of a machine being a person. This framing is useful for generative AI companies and people looking to cut costs by cutting jobs, but is not helpful for us as we navigate our lives and our future together. The true utility of these models is not the offloading of our reasoning; it's their function as assistive technologies to extend our capabilities and help us reclaim our time to do the things that are meaningful to us! GPT-5 and its rivals are extraordinarily advanced computer systems built to make our minds think we are talking to another mind. They are digital mirrors, reflecting back at us what we say we want to see. As these machines become more powerful, we owe it to ourselves to think about and talk about what we value in human work and interactions beyond pure capital, and how we build and use technology to enhance and extend our abilities to do and be and build futures we have reason to value. In a world of ever-more-advanced AI, it is our job to center humanity.

These are words that should be written in gold. At their core, AI should be assistants not replacement. Nothing will ever beat the human touch..

Could you explain this to me like I'm 5... How do I use a mirror to reclaim my time by not offloading reasoning?

Yeah yeah everything's a conspiracy if you're doom-n-gloom enough Meanwhile no AI company has been secretive of the fact that LLM is largely a heuristic product, perhaps with the exception of a few claims about "reasoning" e.g. latest Grok. And why would they be? You can't bank on hiding your LLM isn't a "real person" the same way it would be ridiculous to try and hide having engagement-bait algorithms in place. In both cases the real explanation behind any misconceptions is the simple fact that most users aren't even remotely interested in the underlying mechanisms of the tech they're using.

I am not entirely sure what specifically is being proposed here. I am all for humanity-centered communications with friends and family. Most of our other communications have in our culture been pretty commoditized already. If machines can do them better then humans, humans will prefer communicating with machines.

Thank you for posting this, this is a narrative we need to continue to encourage, IMHO. I like to tell people that, technology is a natural extension of human abilities. Just as the car or the airplane extended the range of our legs, the LLM/AI extends/complements the range of our brains. Economics is based on what we value (literally and figuratively) and as a society and as individuals we must decide, like all technological, social and political evolutions, how we value LLMs/AI. I posted this a while back on LI and wanted to share my take also, if I may: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jonsaltzman_ai-is-a-catalyst-challenging-us-to-look-activity-7338252957735407616-V8vn?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_android&rcm=ACoAAABagEYBrH_FhxCBmHLj48G_0u5leWcYCmU

I've been saying since day one... I WANT MY ROBOTS TO SOUND (and act) LIKE ROBOTS. Like 3CPO. The mimicry of humans in AI, in my opinion, is the greatest design flaw of these technologies, implemented by the hubris of its designers. I know the community of AI & robotics have been chasing the dream of replicating homo sapiens mechanically... but a little tweek such as this could go a long way in preserving our sanity and place in a modern, evolving world. "I understand this is a tool."

While interesting, I wonder if by reducing cognitive loads of humans, is it important whether it’s a human in a box or infrastructure in a far off location

Sure, but... where's the data from? Discussing the virtues of genAI as an assistive technology is jumping the shark when the provenance of the data and the wholesale appropriation of cultural capital is still dumping markets rerouting critical capital, energy, and resources. But hey, so glad that YOU, an AI explainer, find that it helps you reclaim time for what's meaningful for you. Most rightsholders and career creators have a different experience, the absolute best of which is capitulation to "adapt or die" dogma. Very centering.
