I am excited to share that my latest research paper co-authored with Prof Kathy Sole, "Permanent Cathode Technologies in Copper Electrowinning: Development and Status" has been published in Minerals Journal as part of the Special Issue Innovations in Hydrometallurgy: Traditional and Emerging Approaches for Sustainable Metal Recovery. This work explores the evolution and development of the permanent cathode process, its commercial adoption across the global copper industry, and the current technology status. The article explores the common challenges associated with starter-sheet technology and the development of the ISA and KIDD permanent cathode technology. Modern developments in permanant cathode blanks including alternative cathode designs, alternative blank materials of construction, permanent cathode edge strip development, and permanent cathode maintenance and cathode life are further explored. The adoption of permanent cathode technology in industry over starter sheet technology is expected to continue. Automation and the ability to implement robotic operations are facilitated by the use of permanent cathode technology in EW/ER which contribute to the journey to safer, more efficient and, stable and capable operations.
