Here is a unique report on telecom operators that are frontrunners in building the #AI economy. What are they doing, how and why? Certainly worth reading and reflecting! Great work and insightful observations by Sebastian, as always!

Stop Bundling ChatGPT. Some Telcos Are Building the AI Economy. While some Telcos call it “innovation” to bolt a free ChatGPT subscription onto mobile plans, a group of 53 telcos is taking a far more serious route: positioning themselves inside the AI value chain where real economic gravity sits. I’ve tracked their moves across 5 concrete arenas: (1) sovereign GPU “AI factories,” (2) telco-native large language models, (3) AI-RAN and edge autonomy, (4) enterprise AI cloud platforms, and a small but strategic (5) device layer. The shift is tangible and creates more than 60 specifc projects! Deutsche Telekom is building a Germany-based AI gigafactory with NVIDIA and Brookfield, designed to anchor sovereign compute for national and enterprise AI workloads. Singtel, via its Nxera unit, is using ASEAN data centers as a GPU-as-a-Service backbone, making in-region AI capacity a commercial product rather than a press release. Telefonica is wiring GPUs into central offices to run anomaly detection, traffic forecasting, and model inference at the edge, cutting latency and reducing SLA breaches. Fastweb MIIA, trained on an in-country DGX SuperPOD, shows why controlling both compute and weights matters: you can tune on local data, enforce residency, and drop per-token costs. These Telcos moved beyond buying customer chatbots. They are making capital-intensive bets on compute, models, and edge fabrics; the assets that decide who captures value when AI stops being a demo and becomes infrastructure. I’ve mapped more than 60 cases. A more detailed breakdown in my latest newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gP_3Yn5y

Apple Intelligence isn’t just another AI feature; it’s a subtle but powerful integration shaping how we interact with everyday apps like Messages, Mail, and Notes. Unveiled in late 2024, the standout element is Apple’s decision to combine on-device AI processing with cloud-powered enhancements—allowing many tasks like email composition or text summarization to happen locally without sending sensitive data to external servers. This hybrid approach prioritizes privacy while maintaining performance, a balance that many tech companies struggle to achieve. What’s more, Apple is enabling developers to build on these AI models offline through its new Foundation Models framework. This means smarter apps that don’t rely heavily on cloud APIs, reducing latency and protecting user data. Meanwhile, Siri’s ongoing transformation—although delayed due to quality hurdles—aims to become more context-aware by tapping into both Apple Intelligence and integrations like ChatGPT. This strategy reveals Apple’s distinct AI path: pragmatic, privacy-first, and developer-friendly rather than chasing headline-making AI novelties. It’s an approach that could redefine user trust in AI tools. How is your team balancing AI innovation with privacy and reliability, especially when integrating AI into user-facing products? What lessons have you learned in navigating these challenges? #AppleIntelligence #AIPrivacy #GenerativeAI #DeveloperTools

Why are 90% of employees using ChatGPT for work while their companies' $30-40B AI investments deliver zero returns? Massachusetts Institute of Technology AI Divide Study reveals that 95% of enterprise GenAI pilots are failing. Here is the breakdown: ✅ Only 5% of custom AI tools reach production (vs 40% for ChatGPT) ✅ 90% of employees use personal AI tools while only 40% of companies have official subscriptions ✅ External partnerships succeed 2x more than internal builds ✅ Only 2 out of 9 major industries show real structural change The real problem is the "learning gap." Most enterprise AI systems can't learn, adapt, or remember context. Meanwhile, employees are already crossing the "GenAI Divide" through shadow AI usage. Where the ROI lives: Front-office gets 50% of budgets, but back-office automation delivers the wins: ✅ $2-10M saved eliminating BPOs ✅ 30% reduction in agency costs ✅ Faster payback periods The window to cross this divide is closing fast. Organizations that succeed buy learning-capable systems instead of building static tools.
