🚨 With new waste-to-energy licences being granted in Victoria, many see burning plastic for power as an important part of the circular economy. But when it comes to bulk bags and sacks, there’s a smarter, greener choice: mechanical recycling. So, what does that actually mean? Instead of burning plastics, mechanical recycling shreds and remelts them so they can be turned into useful products again and again, like plastic pallets, community seating, park benches, or even water-saving evaporation discs. Under the Big Bag Recovery program, this process is already happening right here in Australia. Now, let’s compare: ♻️ Mechanical recycling → lower energy use, fewer emissions, and materials kept in circulation for up to 40 years across multiple recycling cycles 🔥 Waste-to-energy methods (like pyrolysis) → often useful for small/mixed plastics such as chip packets, but typically result in a one-time oil product, with higher energy inputs, more emissions, and less material left to recover A recent RMIT University report backs this up: mechanical recycling of LDPE plastics has the lowest carbon footprint (around 6.1 kg CO₂-e per kg), while waste-to-energy options generate significantly higher emissions, especially as electricity grids transition to renewables. Are we still talking about a Circular Economy? A recent study reveals that while the EU leads globally in waste management, there's still untapped potential to reduce emissions and societal costs. With €136 billion spent annually and only metals delivering net benefits, the current system falls short of its promise. Currently, EU waste management policies help avoid about 34 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions each year, which is approximately 1% of the EU’s total annual emissions.
