Closed-loop geothermal is rewriting the playbook for clean energy. Unlike traditional geothermal that relies on underground water reservoirs, closed-loop systems circulate a working fluid through sealed pipes drilled deep into the earth. The result? Consistent, 24/7 renewable heat and power—without needing rare geologic conditions. It’s geothermal, but anywhere. The potential is massive. #Geothermal #CleanEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Innovation https://lnkd.in/gWfP_CJx
Closed-loop geothermal: a new way to harness clean energy anywhere

Modern geothermal systems have made the question "What happens when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine?" irrelevant. New closed-loop geothermal technology circulates fluid through sealed pipes 4-6 kilometres underground, extracting heat without water or geological risks. The result? 24/7 clean electricity generation with zero emissions and 95%+ uptime. Compare that to coal: scheduled maintenance shutdowns, fuel supply disruptions, equipment failures, and environmental compliance issues regularly take plants offline. Average coal plant availability hovers around 85%. Fervo Energy's Nevada project is already demonstrating 3.5 MW of consistent power generation using enhanced geothermal systems. Eavor's closed-loop technology eliminates the geological constraints that limited traditional geothermal to volcanic regions. The breakthrough isn't just technical—it's locational. Enhanced geothermal can be deployed anywhere drilling rigs can access deep earth temperatures. That means reliable baseload power can be manufactured in Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, or anywhere else coal plants currently operate. Google, Microsoft, and other tech giants are betting billions on this technology precisely because it delivers what their data centres need most: predictable, constant, clean electricity with zero fuel risks. We're witnessing the emergence of "manufactured" baseload renewable energy. Enhanced geothermal doesn't just compete with coal—it outperforms it on the metrics that matter most to grid operators. Do we want energy independence that can't be held hostage by supply chains, weather, or geopolitics?

Utah will soon be home to the world's largest enhanced #geothermal power plant. When people think of geothermal energy, they often picture Iceland or New Zealand — geologically active places where heat is close to the surface. That could all be about to change though. Fervo Energy's Cape Station project will demonstrate the viability of geothermal almost anywhere. One of the company's biggest innovations is the use of horizontal drilling. Instead of drilling straight down, Fervo extends its wells horizontally – by up to 5,000 feet at their deepest point. This allows the well to access more heat from the same depth, and means Fervo's plants cost less and are viable in more places than traditional geothermal plants. They're also easier to scale up. Another benefit of Fervo's approach is that it uses a closed system. All the water that would have been lost as steam - a common downside of traditional geothermal - is captured and recirculated underground to keep the system running. Phase 1 is expected to start generating 100 MW next year. An additional 400 MW will come online in 2028. There is still some way to go before this tech reaches giga-scale, but these are encouraging signs. While offering a reliable, round the clock source of energy, will it be able to compete with solar and batteries, which are booming around the world as prices continue to fall? #energy #sustainability #renewables #energytransition

“Startup to test closed-loop #geothermal drilling in US to harness Earth’s heat” “The system operates without drilling or water, using a sealed loop to harvest heat from sedimentary basins.” Sep 16, 2025 - Georgina Jedikovska “Canadian geothermal company has just landed a USD 38 million investment to launch a new underground #heatpump that doesn’t require drilling into hot rock, using water, or releasing emissions to produce energy.” “Alberta-based #geothermalpowergeneration firm Rodatherm Energy Corporation secured the Series A investment from TDK Ventures, the corporate venture-capital subsidiary of TDK Corporation.” “The funding will help the firm advance its innovative #closedloopgeothermalsystem (AGS) technology, which promises to deliver affordable, long-term, #sustainableenergy.” “Essentially a massive underground heat pump, the AGS is a modular, pressurized system that mimics the thermodynamics of surface heat pumps, but at a depth. It extracts the heat using a new working fluid that remains fully isolated from the ground.” “This eliminates the need for fracking, steam, or groundwater extraction, while at the same time removing any risk of environmental contamination. Moreover, the system delivers 50 percent higher efficiency than conventional binary-cycle geothermal systems, using five times less fluid.” “Meanwhile, heat is transferred through conduction and convection into the isolated fluid, which is then routed directly into a turbine for power generation.” https://lnkd.in/eY7zssg9 Source- original post Read all my posts #MariusPreston

Scientists just discovered a massive geothermal energy source hiding beneath our feet that could power Earth for 170,000 years! Here's why this changes everything. This isn't your typical hot springs geothermal - we're talking about superhot rock formations 3-12 miles underground that reach temperatures of 750°F or higher. These Enhanced Geothermal Systems could generate 5 terawatts of clean electricity, enough to meet global energy demands multiple times over. The breakthrough comes from new drilling technology that can reach these extreme depths and handle the intense heat. Companies like Fervo Energy are already proving this works, with their Nevada project generating 3.5 megawatts of continuous clean power. Unlike solar and wind, this energy source runs 24/7 regardless of weather. This could be the game-changer that makes fossil fuels obsolete once and for all. Imagine unlimited clean energy available anywhere on Earth, just by drilling deep enough. Check out the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gjp-6J2d

Norway’s Natural Gas, Hydropower and Methane Splitting: 🍃The Missing Piece in Europe’s Hydrogen Transition? At the recent Hydrogen Conference in Norway, the CEO of Hydrogen Europe delivered a keynote that challenged conventional thinking: Norwegian natural gas is not a problem to be phased out, but a solution to be leveraged. With the world’s lowest upstream emissions and an energy system underpinned by renewable hydropower, Norway is uniquely positioned to provide Europe with secure, affordable, and low-carbon hydrogen for decades to come by replacing grey and building a bridge to the future. A central focus of the speech was methane splitting (methane pyrolysis/plasmalysis...) By producing hydrogen at the lowest cost while generating no CO₂ and no CCS, only solid carbon, methane splitting stands out as the most competitive clean hydrogen pathway available today. Powered by Norwegian hydropower, its carbon footprint undercuts virtually all alternatives. It would not be surprising to see Hydrogen Europe establish a dedicated Methane Splitting Working Group in the near future. The conclusion is clear: natural gas, when paired with advanced technologies like methane splitting, will be instrumental in moving Europe from grey hydrogen to hydrogen with a dramatically lower carbon footprint. Rather than sidelining gas, Europe will harness Norway’s twin advantages of clean feedstock and clean power to accelerate its energy transition.
