🌊 Plastic Pollution in Inland Water Bodies – An Overlooked Issue Most of the time, when we talk about plastic pollution, we focus on the oceans. But inland water bodies such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and wetlands are equally threatened, and we often overlook their importance. As an Aquatic Bio Resources undergraduate, I’ve observed how huge amounts of plastics are released into inland waters. The major sources include household waste such as plastic bottles, bags, sanitary napkins, and food packaging. Tourist-attractive water bodies are also prone to pollution due to careless disposal. The biodiversity of these aquatic environments is highly affected. Fish and other animals often mistake plastics for food, or get entangled, which can even lead to death. Sunlight penetration is reduced when plastics cover the water surface, lowering oxygen levels and disrupting aquatic ecosystems. This problem affects humans too. Microplastics enter the food chain through fish and end up in human consumption, leading to potential health issues. Drinking water sanitation is also threatened by plastic pollution in freshwater sources. 💡 So, how can we reduce the impact? • Reduce single-use plastics • Improve waste management systems • Promote research to find sustainable alternatives • Strengthen community awareness & policy support Even small water bodies deserve special concern, because they directly affect both biodiversity and human well-being.
