The transformation of the former Vaux site into a vibrant new place to live is gathering pace. Thirteen years ago, as the lead designer of the winning competition concept for Nowa Huta of the Future, I had the privilege of working with an outstanding team to imagine the future of this unique part of Kraków. In a recent interview with LoveKraków, I reflected on the beginnings, vision, and challenges of this ambitious masterplan—and I am happy to see how many of its ideas have since been implemented.   The masterplan covered over 5,000 hectares, with the goal of transforming Nowa Huta into a fully fledged, multifunctional district. It was one of the first large-scale projects in Poland to apply the principles of a sustainable, green city—integrating housing, business, recreation, and cultural spaces with a strong emphasis on public transport.   This vision was the result of an eight-person team. Key partners were Adam Drobniak, economist with deep experience in post-industrial revitalization, and Michal Beim, transport specialist whose expertise in connecting infrastructure and mobility had a decisive influence on the plan. We were also joined by Adam Polko, Rafał Schurma, Anna Karłowska, Anna Saucha, and Maciej Wężykowski—each contributing unique knowledge and creativity.   Our concept proposed a new urban center, a development corridor linking logistics, industry, housing, and recreation, and cultural anchors such as a Science and Technology Center, Expo grounds, and a Steel Museum. Many of these directions live on today in the strategic projects of Nowa Huta Przyszłości, even if at a lower intensity than originally envisioned. Cities often grow in phases—and with new transport infrastructure emerging, the potential for densification remains strong.   Looking ahead, Nowa Huta can be more than a district of economic activity. The idea of a Steel Museum, now supported by the listing of the blast furnace as a historic monument, offers a chance to create a landmark cultural destination. At the same time, Nowa Huta could become a laboratory for new housing models—from co-housing communities to ecological and senior-friendly living close to nature, yet well connected by transit. We’ve announced a joint venture agreement with Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd.(MEC) for the delivery of our Harbourside project in Sydney. We are excited to expand our partnership with MEC - as one of Japan’s leading real estate developers, MEC shares our vision of delivering world-class communities in key urban locations, as demonstrated by their partnership with us across our LIV build to rent assets. Harbourside is the final piece of the rejuvenation of Darling Harbour. On completion, it is expected to deliver approximately 260 luxury apartments across 48 levels, along with 35,000 square metres of premium grade office and curated retail space. The precinct revitalisation will also deliver over 10,000 square metres of public open space, including a new waterfront promenade and a new 3,500 square metre waterfront park; pedestrian connections to Pyrmont and the waterfront including $50 million in public domain funding; and $7 million in public art and activation. Harbourside will have diverse retail offerings, including restaurants, national and international retailers, integrating and activating the public spaces. In keeping with Mirvac’s and MEC’s decarbonisation journey, Harbourside Residences has been designed to be fully electric and is targeting a 5 Star Green Star Buildings rating and 7 star NatHERS minimum average. The Premium-grade office component is targeting a 6 Star Green Star rating and Gold WELL certification. The Harbourside precinct will feature 6,000 square metres of green roofs, in addition to the public domain and the planting of over 100,000 plants on a site which previously had no green landscape spaces.

Exciting times ahead as Mirvac bring this vision to life with MEC. With sustainability at its core, Harbourside is targeting top-tier environmental certifications and will feature fully electric residences, green roofs, and extensive landscaping – a true benchmark for future-focused development.
