Humans in the Loop (Thought Piece) There’s a myth that automation is about replacing people. But the best automation projects I’ve seen? They put humans at the center. Think about it: A machine can sort 1,000 items an hour. But a human can see context, spot the one “strange” item, and ask why. Software can flag a late delivery. But only a human can call the customer and preserve the relationship. The real power is in humans + machines, not humans vs. machines. In African workplaces, this balance is even more critical. Culture values community and human connection. If you try to remove people entirely, you risk destroying trust. But if you empower people with automation — so they stop chasing signatures and start solving problems — morale rises, not falls. Ethically, too, automation must not strip dignity. It should free people from drudgery, while keeping them part of the decision-making loop. 💡 The best automation doesn’t ask: “How do we replace humans?” It asks: “How do we make humans stronger?”

I have noticed the same mistakes popping up again and again and quietly draining budgets, frustrating teams, and erasing the ROI leaders were expecting. Here are the most common ones: 1. Automating chaos – Instead of fixing broken processes, they rush to automate them. That just makes inefficiency run faster and at scale. 2. Overcomplication – Too many steps, tools, and triggers = fragile workflows that constantly break. 3. No clear ROI – “Cool” automations that don’t actually save time or money are wasted effort. 4. Ignoring the human factor – Without training and documentation, adoption fails. 5. Siloed systems – Each department builds in isolation, leaving data stuck in different corners. 6. No maintenance plan – APIs, compliance, and processes change. Automations must evolve too. The truth? Automation isn’t about stacking tools or building the flashiest workflow. It’s about creating lean, reliable systems that make businesses faster, simpler, and more profitable. Automation ≠ Efficiency (unless you fix this first) One of the biggest myths I see in teams is the idea that automation automatically means efficiency. It doesn’t. If your process is broken, automating it won’t solve the problem. It just means you’ll scale the chaos faster. Think about it—copy-pasting mistakes at speed is still just… faster mistakes. Here’s the truth: tools like n8n, Zapier, or Make don’t magically make your business efficient. Real efficiency comes when you fix the workflow first, then automate the parts that truly save time. Automation is powerful, but only when the foundation is solid. So before you plug in tools or set up scripts, ask: 1. Is this process clear and logical? 2. Does it actually serve the goal? 3. What steps can I simplify or remove first? Only then does automation unlock real value. If you haven’t done it yet, audit your workflows. The clarity you gain will save you more time (and money) than any automation tool ever could.

Automation with a Human Touch In one of my previous leadership roles, I came across a situation that perfectly illustrated both the risks and opportunities of relying on manual processes. A critical workflow was consuming the full-time effort of 12 people. Day after day, talented employees were tied up in repetitive, manual tasks that added little value to the wider business and left them frustrated. I knew there had to be a better way. With a relatively modest investment and the use of some clever programming, we automated the process. Almost overnight, the work of 12 people was reduced to a task that required just two individuals to monitor for errors and exceptions. That left us with a choice. What should we do with the other 10 people? For many organisations, the instinct might have been to cut costs and let those staff go. But for me, that wasn’t the right answer. These were smart, capable individuals who understood the business inside-out. Releasing them would have meant losing valuable knowledge, experience, and potential. So, we took a different approach. We redeployed them. We trained them, gave them customer-facing responsibilities, and encouraged them to strengthen relationships with our clients. Rather than being stuck in repetitive work, they were now improving customer communication, providing proactive updates, and enhancing the overall service we offered. The outcome was powerful: The employees felt valued, motivated, and more fulfilled. Customers noticed the difference immediately and appreciated the more responsive, personal service. The business itself grew stronger, building loyalty and trust that translated directly into long-term value. That experience reinforced something I believe strongly to this day: automation isn’t about eliminating people — it’s about freeing them up to do the work that really matters.
