This is "Beach Week" at the Whitfield County Senior Center so I took some time Monday to visit our senior citizens and thank the staff for the good work they do every day. We live in a time when a substantial portion of elderly Americans are socially isolated and struggling financially. That sad fact makes our Center vital as a place where the County's seniors can engage in human interaction bringing a measure of happiness while forestalling cognitive decline. Even worse, the nutritious lunch we serve is for some seniors the only decent meal they eat that day. We could throw up our hands claiming the problem is too big to address or blame those in Atlanta and Washington for this sorry state of affairs. But that is not how proactive, caring governments and communities operate. And so maintaining our Senior Center and its services is one of many ways Whitfield County government makes our small corner of the world a better place to live.
