How to Tell if a Valve is Open or Closed Have you ever stood in front of a valve and wondered, “Is this open or closed?” I’ve faced the same situation. At times, I even tried to sense the flow by touching the pipeline—but that isn’t safe, especially when the milk is hot. Here’s a safer and more reliable way to check: 🔹 Two-Way Valve Works like a simple switch. Handle in line with the pipe → OPEN (flow). Handle across the pipe → CLOSED (no flow). 🔹 Three-Way Valve Functions like a traffic controller for liquids. It diverts flow between two directions. The handle position shows which line is open. 👉 Key takeaway: Always trust the handle position rather than the “touch test.” It’s safer and more accurate. Discharge Valve Concept During Centrifugal Pump Start-Up When starting a centrifugal pump, it is standard practice to keep the suction valve open and the discharge valve closed. Many engineers and operators often ask, why closed? Here’s the reasoning: ✅ Reduces motor load – The pump starts against minimum resistance, avoiding sudden high current draw. ✅ Smooth acceleration – Prevents mechanical stress on the pump and motor during startup. ✅ Prevents water hammer – Protects piping and equipment from sudden pressure surges. ✅ Protects pump & system – Ensures safe conditions before gradually opening the discharge. From a technical perspective: Pump Power ∝ Pressure × Flow × Head (P × Q × H). At closed discharge, Q ≈ 0, so Power ≈ Minimum. This simple step helps in smooth, safe, and reliable pump operation. 🔹 Always open the discharge valve gradually after the pump reaches full speed.

Flynn is recognized worldwide for its ribbon burners, but over the past decade the company has expanded its expertise and become a key player in the oven controls industry. Today, Flynn provides complete combustion hardware, advanced control panels, “Bakenet” software, Oven Safety Auditors, and full installation services. We are now entering an exciting new chapter with the first full mechanical upgrade of a 960-tunnel oven. Flynn was awarded the turnkey project and is carrying out the work in two phases: Phase One – Completed 8/27/25 Removal of all constant ignition and conversion to individual burner flame safety while bringing all combustion safety equipment to comply with current code. Installation of all combustion related components, inclusive of: TriZone burners, air and gas headers, direct coupled air flow control valves, flame safety pre-wired in stainless trough. In tandem, a complete mechanical rebuild was installed, replacing all chain, rails, shoes, wear strips, drive system sprockets and new loader arms and equipment. Phase Two – Scheduled for Q1 2026 Installation of a new control panel featuring “Bakenet” software, integration of all field I/O, and full system re-commissioning.
