The cybersecurity "skills shortage" isn't what you think it is. After 25 years in cybersecurity leadership (without a college degree) Joshua Scott has seen firsthand how our narrow hiring practices create artificial scarcity. We're chasing unicorns instead of recognizing talent: Demanding degrees for skills-based roles. Only recruiting from traditional security backgrounds. Requiring perfect matches instead of training potential "With enough passion, raw intelligence, and hard work, anyone can be a successful cybersecurity professional." It's time to stop doing the same thing over and over. The talent is there - we just need to recognize it. #Cybersecurity #InfoSec #Hiring #TalentAcquisition #CyberJobs #SecurityCareers #CISO #TechHiring #SkillsShortage #CyberWorkforce

How I Broke Into Cybersecurity: From No Tech Background to Penetration Tester in 6 Months. I wanted to share my journey into cybersecurity, hoping it might inspire others who are looking to make a similar transition. I graduated with a BA — not in tech or even English. I had no prior knowledge of computers and worked in logistics and e-commerce before making the leap. Fast forward 6 months, and I landed a role as a Penetration Tester. Sadly, the company I worked for shut down due to a project closure, so I’m currently seeking new opportunities. But despite this setback, I’m confident in the skills I’ve gained and the path I’ve paved. Here’s how I did it: Networking: Building connections within the cybersecurity community was absolutely essential. A referral through my network helped me land my first interview. Building a Strong Foundation: I focused on the fundamentals: Networking basics and the OSI model Linux tools, Burp Suite, OWASP Top 10 Bash scripting and Python Reconnaissance (this is key for penetration testing) Hands-On Practice: I spent hours manually exploiting vulnerabilities in web applications. This experience gave me a much deeper understanding of how things work. Continuous Learning: I made it a point to learn something new every day. Whether it was reading articles, watching tutorials, or experimenting on my own, I was always working to improve. I’ll admit, transitioning into cybersecurity wasn’t easy, and the field can seem overwhelming. But with determination, self-discipline, and a strong support system, it’s absolutely possible. If you’re considering making the switch, don’t let your background hold you back. If I can make it from a non-tech background, you can too. I’m actively seeking new opportunities in cybersecurity, particularly in penetration testing. Feel free to reach out if you have advice, job leads, or want to chat about the industry. Let’s keep pushing forward! #CyberSecurity #PenetrationTesting #CareerChange #InfoSec #CyberSecJourney #Networking #CyberSecurityCareers #SelfTaught #EthicalHacking #CEH #ContinuousLearning #CyberSecurityCommunity #JobSearch #PenTest #CareerDevelopment #Hacking #TechTransition #jobs
