One under-discussed risk of fully autonomous cars isn’t tech but the human behavior. In San Francisco, people recently stopped a Waymo and jumped on it—just for fun. Would anyone dare to do the same if a human was behind the wheel? Probably not. A human driver carries uncertainty—you might get run over. With Waymo, everyone knows it’s programmed to avoid harm. That creates new dynamics: At a 4-way stop, do you let Waymo go first? Or do you hijack the right of way, knowing the robot will always yield? Society works because people can—and will—stand up for themselves. When robots can’t, do they become “overly nice guys” which would finish last?
