Lately, I’ve seen a lot of posts and articles claiming that “Agile doesn’t work.” Let’s be clear: Agile is not a magic wand. It won’t fix bad management, disengaged leaders, or teams unwilling to collaborate. What Agile does do (when practiced correctly) is shine a light on what’s broken, provide data for improvement, and surface the uncomfortable truths organizations often try to ignore. The process itself cannot solve poor practices; it can only highlight them. That spotlight is uncomfortable, and too often the blame gets placed on the framework rather than the accountability required to change. As someone who has spent nearly two decades as an Agile Coach and Scrum Master, I’ve seen Agile succeed when companies are committed to continuous improvement, transparency, and actually doing the work of change. So when I hear “Agile doesn’t work,” what I often see is resistance to accountability. Let's talk about the state of collaboration in the modern world. We throw around terms like "cross-functional interaction" as if they're a given—a problem we've already solved. But in reality, we often operate as if the decades of learned wisdom on project management, agile frameworks, and product development don't exist. We fail to define our processes and how we interact, which leads to one inevitable, recurring question: "How do we actually get this done?" At this point, we have a fork in the road: → Option A: Ignore established best practices and try to forge a new path from scratch every time, hoping we stumble upon the right resources and competence. → Option B: Wake up, and intentionally use the vast body of knowledge already available to us. We must learn how to properly manage teams, allocate resources, and make smart decisions at key milestones to drive innovation and achieve tangible results. The choice is clear. True innovation isn't about ignoring proven methods; it's about applying them intelligently to build the future. Improving Organisational Design: Agile + Matrix The Matrix Model is powerful as it combines functional depth with project-based flexibility. however it can struggles with: Complexity & role confusion Slower decision-making Conflicting priorities This got me thinking, what if agile practices could strengthen the matrix model instead of weighing it down? Here’s where I think agile could make the difference: Clarity & Alignment: stand-ups and sprint planning keep priorities visible and reduce tension between functions. Collaboration: agile thrives on cross-functional teamwork, reinforcing the matrix’s aim of breaking down silos. Speed: sprints + feedback loops mean quicker adaptation and delivery. Accountability: roles like Product Owner or Scrum Master give a clear decision-making point, cutting through ambiguity. Could agile be the key to making the matrix model work better — and support culture?
