California's SB 690 paused, website cookie lawsuits surge

Interrupting updates from my travel Down Under for an important privacy law update. California's SB 690 - A bill that would have curbed the surge in website cookie lawsuits under California's Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA) - has been paused until at least 2026, leaving businesses vulnerable to continued litigation. 📊 The numbers are staggering: 2,341 digital wiretapping lawsuits filed nationwide since 2022, with 79% (1,845) in California alone. Plaintiffs' attorneys are using a 1967 wiretapping law to target routine website tools like cookies, pixels, and session replay software—technologies never contemplated when the law was written. 4 steps businesses should take now: 1️⃣ Stay compliant - Audit tracking tools, strengthen privacy disclosures, and review consent practices 2️⃣ Engage in policy - Work with trade associations and lawmakers to shape future CIPA reform 3️⃣ Get legal guidance - Partner with experienced counsel to navigate this evolving landscape 4️⃣ Get custom compliance software. If you're an auto dealership, ComplyAuto is the best (and that's not just because I work for them). See great write up from Fisher Phillips in the comments. 🍀Pic from Hartley’s Croc Farm in Port Douglas. The parrot and I wore matching colors.
