I’ve been hearing a lot of people say the same thing lately: 👉 “I want to do something that actually makes a difference. That I can see.” There’s a shift happening. A growing pull toward local impact—not as a retreat from national issues, but as a way to re-engage. To feel agency. To connect. This isn’t an either/or. National change still matters—urgently. But local efforts are where more and more people are channeling their energy: mentoring a young person in your city, getting involved in local issues, offering your skills to support a local nonprofit. At Taproot Foundation, we see it every day: professionals showing up to offer their expertise to nonprofits—pro bono. Not in theory. In real life. Strengthening work that’s already happening in their community. And lately we’ve seen a real surge. More people raising their hands to give time. To help. To make something better. It feels like part of something bigger. The data backs it up: In 2023, 61% of Americans said they trust their local community to do what’s right—more than any other level of government or institution. (Edelman Trust Barometer). Are you noticing this shift? Are you feeling it yourself? I’d love to hear what you’re seeing—and what’s working in your world.
I am definitely seeing this - not just professionally but in my personal circles as well. Local change agents will make all the difference these next few years!
Absolutely resonating with this. As I work with Jalawelo—a Taproot Foundation client—I continue to see just how real and rewarding local, skill-based impact can be. Pro bono collaborations like ours fuel authentic change, foster community, and let us witness transformation up close. There’s powerful momentum in so many professionals stepping in to help locally. Thanks for putting words (and data) to what I’m experiencing every day—change starts close to home and truly matters.
Local community and local nonprofits are so important. I am so glad you’ve seen an increase in people stepping up to help!
I moved from Washington, DC, to Texas about 1.5 years ago, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the local engagement lately. It’s inspiring to see people genuinely caring and getting involved.
