At just 22, Chennai’s Anandkumar Velkumar made history as India’s first-ever speed skating world champion—then doubled it with another gold. In Beidaihe, China, the computer engineering student won the men’s 1000m sprint in 1:24.924, added a bronze in the 500m, and stunned the world by conquering the 42 km marathon. His journey began 15 years ago on a cement badminton court near home, inspired by his sister, guided by his first coach Mr. Ranna Raja, and fueled by parents who never let him miss practice. “Training in India is tough. Cycling or skating on the roads means early mornings and traffic, and high-level competition needs international exposure,” he told India Today. Yet through dawn practices, late-night assignments, and years of sacrifice, Anandkumar’s dream became reality. “I didn’t expect gold. My target was the podium. I’m happy I could go one step further.” From crowded Chennai streets to the world stage, his story proves no roadblock is bigger than belief. #AnandkumarVelkumar #SpeedSkating #IndiaOnTrack #WorldChampionships2025
