Flow metrics on your GitHub projects? I got you covered. A quick chat in the ProKanban.org community Slack channel got me back to writing code and articles. All you need to understand flow through flow metrics are start and finish timestamps. Often we restrict ourselves to applying these flow metrics to the generic software development lifecycle, typically tracked by work management systems like Jira or Trello. But what if we want to understand other aspects of our flow, like a team's ability to handle pull requests or to tackle issues reported on a git repository? In my latest article, I am sharing my latest experiment in calculating flow metrics for GitHub issues and pull requests and, spoiler alert, there's also a free tool you can download and use. This week I've spent time doing MCP (Model Context Protocol) training for developer teams at three different companies, and in all three meetings their eyes lit up when I demonstrated using GitHub's MCP server inside Cursor to manage tickets. Personally, this capability along with the Playwright MCP server's ability to write prompt-based tests have been the two most significant productivity gains, and it's exciting to see others coming to similar conclusions. And if your organization doesn't use GitHub for issue management, MCP servers are available for all other popular ticket management solutions such as JIRA and Linear. Trello unfortunately doesn't yet have an official MCP server however hopefully Atlassian is working on it.
