The Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity called for specific guidelines regarding the frequency, intensity, and duration of physical activity, the appropriate amount of screen time, and the optimal duration of sleep for children under the age of five. These behaviours can play a crucial role in preventing overweight and obesity. Although these behaviours have often been studied separately in relation to health outcomes, these behaviours in reality form a continuum of movement across the day. Time spent on one behaviour inevitably impacts the time available for the others within a 24-hour context. As such, they are collectively referred to as 24-hour movement behaviours. The objectives of this doctoral thesis were two-fold: (1) to investigate the association between integrated 24-hour movement behaviours and overweight/obesity in preschoolers, and (2) to co create, implement and evaluate an intervention with parents to optimise 24-hour movement behaviours in preschoolers.
