LED Power Control via Optocoupler Shunting Explanation : An optocoupler allows one circuit to control another without a direct electrical connection, using light inside the device. This circuit uses a PC817 optocoupler to control a group of LEDs with two switches - S2 (ON switch): When closed, current flows through the LED string, so the LEDs turn ON (if the optocoupler is inactive). S1 (OFF switch): When closed, it drives the input LED of the optocoupler. This activates the phototransistor, which shorts the LED string and cuts off its voltage, so the LEDs turn OFF. In short: S2 ON → LEDs light. S1 ON → LEDs are forced OFF using the optocoupler. Here’s a one-liner : “When S2 is closed LEDs turn ON, and when S1 is closed the optocoupler shunts the LEDs, turning them OFF. "
