The real challenge isn’t technical. It’s how we move from being an oil and gas community to becoming a part of the next phase of offshore energy. That means jobs. Industry. Identity. And choices that go far beyond LCOE. Earlier this summer, I joined Anders Nash on the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast to talk about Utsira Nord and what this project really means — for Norway and for floating wind. 🎧 Full episode: https://lnkd.in/dTsmNaXT 📄 Utsira Nord Strategic Brief: https://lnkd.in/d9k47uEq

Another great interview at Renew Economy— and two points stood out for me: 1️⃣ AGL’s focus on technology during the transition. As a vertically integrated utility, I would have expected a stronger emphasis on the consumer. 2️⃣ The strategic role of batteries in their portfolio. This raises a broader concern: the NEM Review’s lack of attention to competition and market structure. The acknowledgment that the spot market does not incentivise efficient investment — and that the CIS will need a replacement — has major implications for market design. In a recent paper (https://lnkd.in/gxRfzhi6), we show how in a battery-driven market, price caps may shift their role: · from ensuring reliability, · to constraining market power. This makes the proposed long-run contract market even more critical in addressing the missing money problem. That market could well take the form of Contracts for Differences (CDFs) over different time horizons. If time permits, I plan to make a more detailed submission to the NEM Review — because these design choices will shape the success of the transition.
AGL boss Damien Nicks discusses how the country’s biggest coal generator is managing the transition to renewables, storage and electric homes. Plus: When will another wind farm get finance? 🔗 Listen to the conversation here: https://lnkd.in/gYDbVM5q
