Insights for today from recent work on Domain Driven Design and associated governance. Not all domains are equal. Apply different levels of rigor based on business value. The tiers that matter are, Core domains which translate into a competitive business edge, stricter standards and heavy investment in terms of technical focus during design, development and operations. Supporting domains which are necessary but not business differentiators, usually built in house. Ancillary domains which are usually generic, often replaceable with third party tools if needed. Devise and use rubrics to classify domains with criteria focused on business authority, rule enforcement, blast radius, vendor independence, compliance, and SLOs. Governance should follow value. Core domains get greater oversight and SLOs, ancillary domains can do with lighter processes.
