Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has come a long way, but the way we design retrieval pipelines is changing fast. Traditional RAG offers a straightforward flow retrieve documents, enrich with an LLM, and deliver results. It’s efficient but static, with limited reasoning and adaptability. Agentic RAG introduces more intelligence. Here, LLM agents can choose retrieval tools, refine results iteratively, and adapt to changing queries. It’s smarter and more flexible, though still limited by the boundaries of available tools. The latest step forward is MCP (Modular Capability Provider). Instead of treating retrieval as a pipeline, MCP establishes standardized context protocols and a multi-provider architecture. This allows LLMs to interact with data systems as part of a connected ecosystem rather than isolated components. As data environments grow more complex, static pipelines will fall short.
