10 Ways to Stay Motivated to Stay in Shape This Winter

Winter doesn’t mean letting yourself go. In fact, “Summer bodies are made and maintained in Winter.” Don’t wait for summer to realise you’ve gained unwanted weight and lost your energy. Here’s how to stay motivated through the cold:

  1. Ditch the Snooze Button Set your alarm, get up within 3 seconds, switch on the light, and move. Movement creates heat, boosts endorphins and kickstarts your day.
  2. Know Your WHY Remind yourself daily of your end goal—whether it’s confidence, health, energy or all of the above.
  3. Prioritise Protein Start and end your day with a high-protein meal. It curbs cravings, balances blood sugar, and sharpens your focus.
  4. Cut the Sugar Sugar causes inflammation, brain fog, wrinkles, and mood crashes. Ditch it—you’ll feel the difference.
  5. Get into the Sun Just 10 minutes a day for your Vitamin D and serotonin boost. Mood matters!
  6. Winter Food Swap Make chicken and veg soup your comfort go-to. Ditch the heavy, starchy, processed stuff that spikes blood sugar.
  7. Strength Train 3–4x/Week Strong muscles = better metabolism, stronger bones, and improved mood. Essential as we age.
  8. Add Electrolytes Tap and bottled water often lack vital minerals. Add electrolytes daily to stay hydrated and energised.
  9. Lower Stress, Raise Awareness Stress = high cortisol = fat gain. Practice gratitude, sleep well, and feed your mind positive thoughts.
  10. Find Your Tribe Join a group! Dumbbell class, yoga, boxing, whatever keeps you accountable and connected.

Summer is just a blink away. Move daily, eat with intention, and honour the gift of your body. Stay consistent—not perfect—and you’ll thank yourself when the Summer returns.

Great article Nici! The tough one for me is giving up sugar! I'm 2 weeks in without it and will continue trying. 😐
