The 2023 Review & Looking Ahead to 2024
2023 has been a stellar year for Trina Storage and the BESS industry worldwide, so we’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support throughout, we couldn’t have done it without you.
As we reflect on the outcomes of the recent COP28 event in the UAE, it is evident that the race to achieve net zero has become more urgent than ever before. Here at Trina, we stand at the forefront of this globally collaborative initiative, committed to enabling and accelerating the integration of net zero solutions.
Load shifting continued to be the predominant application of battery storage as it supported the integration of higher volumes of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar in the grid network. Representing nearly ⅔ of the energy storage in 2023, and expedited by new government policy and regulatory frameworks, it’s utility-scale that continues to drive industry innovations forward.
Energy management systems have been a key focus for industry innovation in 2023 as the impact of their performance becomes clear to the efficiency and longevity of the cells by managing power flows, frequency regulation and ancillary support services to the grid.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR
Attaining technical due diligence evaluation from global authority DNV
Back in September, we announced the successful completion of a technical due diligence evaluation of our liquid-cooled battery energy storage system, Elementa. This was conducted by DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, which acknowledged that the product conforms to the industry's expectations for performance, safety and reliability.
Unveiling Elementa 2, the all new utility-scale battery system with in-house cells
Back in October, we unveiled Elementa 2, which has 2MW output and packs a total 4MWh of energy storage capacity into a 20-ft container – almost double the 2.2MWh capacity of the first-generation Elementa – at the renewable energy industry trade show taking place this week in Melbourne, Victoria.
Integrating our energy management system E²MS
Our game-changing solution has been designed to redefine the operational landscape of grid-scale battery energy storage systems. With the fusion of advanced software and dedicated hardware interfaces, E²MS introduces a new era of efficiency for battery energy storage systems.
Delivering integrated Solar + Storage projects in key locations across the world
We started the year strong by signing over 100MWh Elementa deals in the UK, with the projects utilising Trina's in-house Elementa battery system, while the full-wrapped solution comprises Trina's strong engineering as well as service scope. More recently, we announced the delivery of a 50MWh Hybrid Fishery-Solar-Storage project in Hubei province, China. The fully integrated project yields multiple benefits including land preservation, energy efficiency, emission reduction, enhanced corporate productivity, and increased income for farmers, thus contributing positively to both the economy and the environment. It’s now successfully connected to the grid, has a PV installed capacity of 400MW, and is further supported by this advanced energy storage system.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2024
Trina is poised for another transformative year underpinned by innovation, expansion and heightened capabilities. A key focus for our agenda is the highly anticipated release of Elementa 2.0, promising cutting-edge advancements in energy storage technology. Our strategic vision extends beyond borders, as we embark on a journey of market expansion, introducing new products and technologies across Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region.
Central to this effort is the integration of Trina's higher density and capacity cells into expertly designed battery cabinets, targeting lifecycle capacity energy density and improved performance capabilities. This strategic move aims to bring advanced technology to diverse markets while simultaneously driving down costs through economies of scale, emphasising the pillars of cost-effectiveness, performance, and efficiency.
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we are set to ramp up battery manufacturing, introducing next-generation products designed to compete robustly in various markets. A key focus for the year will be an active exploration of the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) as well as residential markets, reaffirming our dedication to providing comprehensive energy solutions across sectors. Trina Storage looks forward to a dynamic and impactful 2024, as we continue to redefine the landscape of energy storage and contribute to a more sustainable future.
