2024 BCRF Associate Thriver: Edith Cantu
At 34 years old, Edith Cantu, DC people success generalist, Fresno, CA tested positive for breast cancer. It all started when she went in for a routine physical and mentioned to her doctor that she had felt something unusual. At the time, the doctor reassured her that she was too young to worry about it, so she moved on. But a few months later, she went back and told her she still wasn’t feeling right and insisted on getting a mammogram. The mammogram was followed by a biopsy, and out of the four samples taken, two tested positive for breast cancer.
The cancer was initially only found on her right side and doctors would remove the right breast only. But just before the surgery, Edith told her doctor, "I believe you’re wrong. I can feel it—I know the cancer is in both breasts." They finally agreed to the double mastectomy. After the surgery, the surgeon held her hand and said, "You were right—we found cancer on the other side." Edith was filled with a mix of emotions—relief, pride, and gratitude that she had the courage to advocate for herself.
“During this journey, I learned so much about myself. I discovered just how strong you can be—until you’re not. There were moments when I felt broken, even with an incredible support system. My husband, daughter, family, and close friends were all wonderful during my recovery, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was somehow letting them down. I ended up having four surgeries to remove all the cancer. Now, seven years later, I’m truly grateful for everything I’ve accomplished. My journey taught me that no matter how old you are, you should always speak your truth and make your voice heard. You matter.” said Edith.
Why is funding breast cancer research to care for survivors important to you?
This can help future generations, explore ways to prevent this disease, and learn why some families are more susceptible.
What advice would you give co-workers/friends/family looking to care for the well-being of loved ones diagnosed with breast cancer?
Be present, tell them that they matter and are not alone.
What does Ulta Beauty’s commitment to BCRF mean to you? Why is it important?
Ulta Beauty’s commitment to BCRF means a lot to me because I love seeing the passion behind BCRF’s efforts to raise money for such an important cause. Breast cancer has impacted me, and my mom, so it really hits close to home.
