3 reasons why passkeys are better than passwords

Managing passwords for the dozens or hundreds of services we log into on a daily basis is a challenge. Weak or compromised passwords are the cause of many massive data breaches. While a password manager, like Dashlane, makes dealing with passwords easier by generating and storing a unique password for each service, they don't solve everything.

The good news is that passkeys are superior to passwords.  A passkey is a pair of cryptographic keys, a private key and a public key, that are generated by a user's device. The private key is stored on the device, while the public key is stored on the server.  Why are passkeys better than passwords?

  1. Passkeys use a strong cryptographic key and don’t need to be memorized. There are no weak passkeys
  2. Passkeys are created automatically and used when they are needed providing instant access and a great user experience
  3. Passkeys are unique to the service that it was created for and can’t be used for any other service and can't be phished or stolen

Passkeys can be stored in a password manager (e.g, Dashlane), iCloud Keychain, Windows Hello as well as others.  As a longtime Dashlane user, I store my passkeys in Dashlane which syncs automatically across my devices.

Passkeys are supported for a number of websites and apps today with more on the way.

Are you using passkeys? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
