THE 3-STEP FIX TO MAKE YOUR DREAMS STICK
“90% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. But what if the problem isn’t you — it’s your system?”
I’ve seen it time and again — professionals, leaders, and high achievers setting ambitious goals with genuine excitement… only to abandon them weeks later.
One of my clients, a driven young manager, once came to me disheartened: "I keep making plans. I want to change. But I never follow through. What’s wrong with me?"
My answer: Nothing is wrong with you. But everything may be wrong with your system.
Most people fail not from lack of ambition, but from systems that ignore how human behaviour works.
Here’s what I’ve learned (and coached) about making goals stick — and it starts with a simple shift from outcome-focused to process-driven.
THE 3-STEP GOAL FIX
1. Start Stupid Small
Big goals feel inspiring… but they often set us up for overwhelm. When life gets busy, your brain will resist the goal that feels like a mountain.
Shrink it to something too small to fail.
Examples:
❌ “Get fit” → ✅ “Do 5 push-ups daily”
❌ “Write a book” → ✅ “Write 100 words a day”
Small wins build confidence and identity: “I’m someone who shows up.” That’s where lasting change begins.
2. Attach It to a Habit
If you’re trying to “find time” every day, you’ll find excuses too. That’s where habit stacking comes in.
Pair your new goal with something you already do, like:
“After I brush my teeth, I’ll journal for 2 minutes.”
“While my coffee brews, I’ll stretch for 1 minute.”
This makes your habit automatic, not effortful.
3. Track Progress Visibly
Motivation is fleeting. But momentum is powerful. Use a wall calendar or an app to track your daily actions.
Every checkmark reinforces your commitment. Soon, you won’t want to “break the chain.” That visual proof keeps you going even when your motivation dips.
WHY THIS MATTERS
When we constantly abandon our goals, we begin to internalise failure. We think, “I’m just not consistent. Maybe I’m not disciplined enough.”
But you are not the problem — your system is.
Real change comes from small, consistent action—layered into your daily rhythm—tracked over time.
You don’t need more pressure. You need a strategy that works with your brain, not against it.
