3 tips to kick start your digestion
Feeling like you have a brick in your stomach after lunch? Secretly hoping that your clients will cancel your afternoon meeting so you can sneak a power nap at your desk instead? I hear ya. I've been there myself. If you experience that on a daily basis, to the point that your tummy feels tight and uncomfortable, then it is time to talk to a gut specialist!
There is so much to address when it comes to digestion. So today, I'll give you 3 quick tips to kick start your digestion.
- Water-rich foods. When you think about it, we are made up of about 70 % water so if things are not moving through the digestive tract, wouldn't it make sense to start consuming more water-rich foods? Nope, I'm not talking about your regular tap water. I'm referring to juicy fruits and vegetables. They contain the perfect combination of minerals and enzymes that your digestive tract needs to break down your food and boost digestion.
- The order. All foods digest in the body at different times. The more complex the food, the longer it takes. Depending on your level of stomach acid, the number of enzymes and other digestive juices, it may take up to a whole day (or more) to digest your food. If you have a slow transit time, start by eating the most easily digestible foods...Yes, you guessed it right: your juicy fruits and veggies. Then you can enjoy your protein and grains.
- Raw food. I know it is a controversial topic! Cooking fruits and vegetables can destroy their water-soluble nutrients and enzymes. Actually, nearly all enzymes are deactivated at temperatures over 47 C (*), which means you're gonna need more enzymes to break down your food into absorbable molecules. Until then, it won't go anywhere. Let's keep it simple though: start your meals with a simple raw fruit/veggie salad. Think (organic) cucumber, celery, apple, kiwi, orange, melon, pineapple, watermelon, etc...All that juicy stuff!
That's it for today. No more agonizing at your desk! Everyone is different though ( some people may be dealing with parasites etc...) so make sure to get help for your specific needs. For more gut-friendly tips, sign up here: www.amanikaite.com
