4 bold predictions for Canada becoming a technology powerhouse in 2050 🍁
The world order is shifting in real-time, and we Canadians have a choice to make.
Globalization is breaking down, with trade wars heating up and forcing countries to rethink their economies, global partnerships and even their very identities - including our own.
But this moment also presents a rare, golden opportunity to transform the very future of our country, and a crisis is a terrible thing to waste.
In 2050, I’ll be 65. My son will be 26. The Canada he steps into as a young man will be shaped by what we choose to build today.
This is my generation’s opportunity - including for those of us building in technology and innovation - to rise, lead, and turn Canada into the envy of the modern world, and the most trusted and innovative nation on the planet.
We already have the raw ingredients. Now it’s time for vision and execution.
So in the spirit of dreaming big, here are my four bold predictions for what Canada could become by 2050 - and how we get there.
Prediction 1: Canada becomes a 75-million-person magnet for the world’s brightest minds.
Our country will be known as the best place on Earth to live, work, raise a family, and build the future. Let’s say it clearly: people already want to live here. We already have:
Universal healthcare and quality public education: Canada consistently ranks highly in global quality of life indices, often in the top 10, with healthcare access and education quality being key contributors.
Safe, welcoming cities: Major Canadian cities consistently rank among the world's most liveable and safe. We typically rank in the top 15 on the Global Peace Index.
A high-functioning social safety net: We dedicate a significant portion of our GDP (~16%) to social spending, supporting programs from employment insurance to child benefits and old age security. And strong safety nets enable a population to take more entrepreneurial risks.
Strong civic institutions and rule of law: Canada consistently ranks in the top tier globally for political stability, absence of violence/terrorism, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, and rule of law.
A reputation for tolerance, stability, and opportunity: Canada is frequently cited as one of the most welcoming countries for immigrants and ranks highly for social progress and overall reputation (such as us being top 6 of the Anholt-Ipsos Nation Brands Index).
Now imagine adding next-level prosperity to that equation thanks to our booming tech opportunities, thriving innovation corridors, continued resource extraction and cities built for people and purpose. That’s not a fantasy - it could be an intentional strategic path.
By 2050, we could grow to 75 million people through smart, valued and skilled-aligned immigration (while still ensuring that we are a nation with a big heart that also welcomes refugees and those in desperate need). Our cities could rival the best in the world - not in size alone, but in quality of life, economic vibrancy, and cultural richness. This isn’t just about attracting talent - it’s about keeping it, empowering it, and letting it lead.
Canada can become the country where the world’s best and brightest come to build what’s next.
Prediction 2: Canada powers some of the world’s largest AI infrastructure - cleanly and securely.
We are already starting to become a go-to destination for new data centers, and this will only accelerate. Canada has the potential to become the world’s most trusted host for AI and digital infrastructure.
AI is often described as “the next electricity” because of its potential to drastically transform every aspect of our lives, from healthcare, finance, agriculture, and defense - and that transformation will only accelerate. AI is about infrastructure: compute, energy, trust, and policy. Canada already has an edge:
Abundant clean energy: Over 80% of Canada's electricity generation comes from non-emitting sources, with hydropower accounting for roughly 60%, making our grid one of the cleanest in the world. This provides a massive advantage for energy-intensive data centers. Add cutting-edge investments in nuclear energy and we will have abundant supply to service an inescapable world.
A cool climate ideal for data center efficiency: Let’s be honest, most of our country offers naturally cool climates, reducing the substantial energy costs associated with cooling data centers.
Political stability, neutrality, and trusted governance: As noted before, Canada's high rankings for stability and rule of law create a secure environment for critical digital infrastructure.
Global leadership in AI research: Canada is recognized as a birthplace of modern AI, housing world-leading hubs like Mila in Montreal, the Vector Institute in Toronto, and Amii in Edmonton, backed by significant federal investment. Canada consistently ranks in the top 5 globally for AI talent concentration and research impact.
By 2050, Canada could be powering a significant portion of the world’s AI infrastructure - and doing so responsibly. Offering secure, and sustainable AI hosting in a world where trust is our currency.
Prediction 3: Canada builds a $2 trillion innovation economy.
Canada’s economy will be led by CleanTech, FinTech, AI, BioTech, AgriTech, DefenseTech - let alone companies we haven’t dreamed of yet. We’ve always been a country rich in natural wealth, but what if we layered huge innovation on top of our great natural resource and become known for our innovation prowess?
Again, we already have:
World-class research institutions: We have renowned universities driving significant research output. But most importantly, our university system aims to be affordable for our citizens, creating a skill-dense population including one of the highest STEM concentrations in the world.
A growing ecosystem of founders, operators, and early-stage capital: Venture capital investment in Canada saw significant scaling over the past decade, fostering an ever-growing number of startups and scale-ups. We already have nearly 100 tech firms with over $100 million in annual revenue, and those ranks are expanding every year.
A strong reputation for ethics, trust, and collaboration: Canada's stable regulatory environment and reputation for fair dealing are assets that will only become more important in building global innovation partnerships.
By 2050, we could build a $2 trillion innovation economy, with dozens of top firms each generating tens of billions in annual revenue. Tech could expand from today’s 12% to a third of GDP. Our pension funds and capital markets could become global leaders in long-term innovation investment.
We won’t get there by accident. We’ll get there with intent - by backing ambitious founders, scaling industrial policy, and making innovation our national mission.
Prediction 4: Canada becomes the world’s problem-solver-in-chief.
That’s the ultimate goal. Not just prosperity. Not just size. But purpose. When the world needs to solve its biggest problems - it turns to Canada first.
Canada can lead the world in solving the hardest, most meaningful problems of the 21st century - and exporting those solutions at scale. We already have:
Deep scientific capacity: Canada is a global player in quantum computing (with significant federal funding and research hubs), genomics (building on a strong life sciences sector), and AI (as mentioned, a world leader). We consistently rank well in overall scientific publication output and impact.
CleanTech innovation: Driven by abundant natural resources, a supportive regulatory environment including strong research, Canada has fostered globally competitive CleanTech companies aiming to solve climate challenges.
A global brand of trust: Consistently high rankings in global surveys on reputation, quality of life, and governance (e.g., Nation Brands Index, Best Countries Report) provide a unique diplomatic and economic advantage.
By 2050, Canada could be known for curing diseases with AI, leading in carbon-negative manufacturing, creating climate-adaptive agriculture, launching the next era of space exploration - along with all of the innovation that can come from our arctic trade routes and ongoing resource development.
“Built in Canada” will become a global badge of cutting-edge innovation wrapped in unparalleled trust.
This is our moonshot moment
We have the resources. We have the talent. We have the values. We have the world’s trust.
Now we need the ambition.
This isn’t about copying someone else’s path. It’s about building something only we as Canadians can build - a future defined by opportunity, purpose, heart, and global leadership.
Let’s build the country our children will be proud to inherit - and that the world will look to for answers.
Let’s build the Canada we were meant to be. 🍁

4moIt may be too late to wait for clean energy to catch up with the massive demand for AI computing power. I hope the Alberta and federal governments find a way to invest significantly in AI infrastructure and energy solutions. With timely innovation, Canada could address environmental challenges effectively without losing momentum. Recent global initiatives highlight the scale of investment required. For instance, the Stargate Project—a collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank, and MGX—plans to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure over the next four years . Additionally, the United Arab Emirates has committed to investing $1.4 trillion in the U.S. over the next decade, focusing on AI and related technologies . In contrast, Canada’s federal government announced a $2.4 billion investment in AI development in 2024 . While this is a positive step, the scale is modest compared to international efforts. To remain competitive and address environmental concerns effectively, Canada may need to consider more substantial investments in AI and energy infrastructure.

5moI support all of this. When it comes to playing into our strengths, I think diversity and a global mindset are huge strengths for Canada. When it comes to what we will need to do better, I would say a cultural shift to really value and strive for excellence above all else combined with a cultural shift away from the Canadian tendency to shame those who shoot for the stars and miss.
