4 Steps to Supercharge your Career with Flow and Strengths
In today’s fast-paced professional landscape, it’s more important than ever to supercharge your career with Flow and Strengths —where skills and challenges harmoniously converge. It can lead to exceptional career growth and personal fulfillment. For this blog, Flow is rooted in the principles of Mihály Csíkszentmihályi’s seminal work, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience. Bolstered by this idea of Flow, as well as insights from the CliftonStrengths® assessment, you can harness your innate talents to excel.
As an ICF Master Certified Coach and Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, I’ve seen firsthand how integrating Flow and CliftonStrengths® transforms careers. Here are 4 Steps to Supercharge Your Career with Flow and Strengths.
1. Discover Your CliftonStrengths® and Embrace Your Unique Talents
Your journey to supercharge your career with Flow and Strengths begins with understanding your CliftonStrengths®. This assessment unveils your dominant talents across 34 themes, offering clarity on what you naturally excel at. For example, if your Strengths include “Analytical” and “Achiever,” you thrive in tasks that require problem-solving and goal attainment. By aligning your daily activities with these Strengths, you pave the way for seamless engagement and fulfillment.
2. Using the Four F’s and Your CliftonStrengths® to Find Your Optimal Zone
For the next step, we’ll delve into at Csíkszentmihályi’s Four F’s of Flow—Focus, Freedom, Feedback, and the Four % Challenge. These principles are pivotal in cultivating and maintaining Flow states, where productivity and fulfillment converge seamlessly.
Focus: Achieving Focus entails immersing yourself fully in the task at hand. There are exercises you can do to bolster flow, such as closing your eyes and directing your focus to a single piece of your environment, such as your breathing, for a full minute. Then, when you open your eyes, redirect that to your work. Additionally, I recommend finding tasks that align with your CliftonStrengths®. Imagine a financial analyst who excels in Strategic and Futuristic thinking. By leveraging these strengths, they can deeply engage in forecasting market trends, identifying patterns, and making informed decisions. Focus also involves minimizing distractions and honing concentration on tasks that challenge and utilize your innate talents.
Freedom: Embrace Freedom by fostering autonomy over your work methods and free yourself from self-scrutiny. It’s recommended to set yourself 30-minute windows of ego-free work, absent of self-judgment or overediting. Trust your autopilot in these moments and see what ideas emerge. You can also lean on you natural strengths to guide you in these windows of self-determined freedom. For instance, a marketing strategist with Strengths in Ideation and Adaptability might benefit from having such freedom to experiment with unconventional campaign ideas. By trusting yourself with this dedicated time of openness and leaning on your natural Strengths, creativity and innovation will undoubtedly flourish.
Feedback: Seeking Feedback is essential for refining skills and progressing towards mastery. Csíkszentmihályi uses the example of a rock climber climbing a wall. Every second, he receives information from his climb as to whether or not he’s meeting his basic goal. Regular feedback loops provide insights into strengths to leverage and areas for growth, and we can utilize our Strengths to lean on them. A software developer with Strengths in Analytical and Developer might seek feedback on their coding practices to improve efficiency and effectiveness. A high Responsibility, on the other hand, might also include independent check-ins. Constructive feedback not only enhances performance but also enhances the sense of progress and accomplishment, which are integral to Flow.
Four % Challenge: Embrace the Four % Challenge by pushing yourself slightly beyond your comfort zone. This principle encourages individuals to find the optimal balance between skill level and challenge intensity. Csíkszentmihályi gives the example of a chess player seeking to improve by playing against opponents who are rated just 4% higher than them. For example, a project manager with Strengths in Command and Activator might take on a complex project that stretches their leadership abilities. This challenge motivates continuous improvement and ensures that tasks remain engaging and stimulating over time.
By integrating Csíkszentmihályi’s Four F’s of Flow with your CliftonStrengths®, you can effectively navigate towards your optimal zone of engagement and productivity. Leaning on Strengths involves aligning your methods with your higher-rated Strengths to create your own optimal way to achieve Flow. This approach not only enhances job satisfaction but also fosters personal growth and professional development.
3. Set Clear Goals and Challenges to Propel Your Growth
Setting clear, challenging goals aligned with your CliftonStrengths® propels you towards Flow. This is essential in creating a concrete, actionable plan to supercharge your career with Flow and Strengths.
Whether you’re in leadership, sales, or creative roles, defining objectives that stretch your abilities ignites motivation and engagement. For instance, a project manager with CliftonStrengths® in Communication and Includer might set a goal to lead a diverse team through a complex initiative, leveraging strengths in team cohesion and communication to achieve success.
4. Create an Environment Conducive to Flow and Optimize Your Workplace
Next, your workplace can be used to supercharge your career with Flow and Strengths. Crafting an environment that supports Flow enhances your ability to achieve peak performance consistently.
Minimize distractions, organize your workspace to facilitate productivity, and establish rituals that prime you for deep focus. Consider a UX designer with Strengths in Empathy and Strategic who benefits from a collaborative workspace with tools that foster creative ideation and user-centric design thinking. As a leader, empower your team members by providing resources, autonomy, and constructive feedback that amplify their Strengths.
In conclusion, integrating CliftonStrengths® and Csíkszentmihályi’s Flow principles into your career strategy elevates productivity, creativity, and job satisfaction. By leveraging your innate CliftonStrengths®, aligning tasks with challenges, and cultivating a supportive environment, you create pathways for professional excellence and personal fulfillment.
Embrace the challenge, and supercharge your career with Flow and Strengths!
