4 Tips to Reduce Procrastination
Procrastination is the art of delaying tasks that we should accomplish. This is a common challenge that many of us face. However, understanding and reducing procrastination can significantly improve our productivity and overall well-being. In this article, we'll explore four practical tips that can help you minimize procrastination and make the most of your time.
1. Understand that Procrastination is normal
This is why I have mentioned the title as '4 tips to REDUCE procrastination' and not 'ELIMINATE'. It is not possible to completely eliminate procrastination. Understand that Procrastination is not a sign of weakness or laziness; it's a natural part of being human. We all have moments when we delay tasks or struggle with motivation. I procrastinate 2-3 hours a day This is not by any means an advice to acknowledge weakness and accept being weak. The key is to acknowledge it and understand that you have to change it. Develop a strong mindset.
2. Plan Your Day
Effective time management is crucial in the fight against procrastination. Create a to-do list or use paper and pen to plan your day. It is unlikely that the day will go perfectly as planned and you will complete all the tasks you have mentioned. However, you will be more productive and will not feel like procrastinating when you have tasks scheduled to be done at a specific time. This is not a practical step to use every day. Only plan the days when you are free and when you want to get more work done.
3. Keep Your Phone Away While Working
I made this mistake for a long time. I would keep my phone near me when I am working on something important thinking that I would have the discipline to not use it. However, after working for some time, I take it to have a break and without knowing, the 5-minute break has turned into 30-40 minutes of time wasted.
When you use your phone as a way to relax while working, you go to Instagram, Pinterest, and other useless social media platforms and they overload dopamine-filled entertainment and information to your mind and fucks it up. Now you have a lack of dopamine (a feel-good chemical released in the brain ), as a result, you do not have the will nor the motivation to do the hard work and therefore you procrastinate more. It is a never-ending cycle.
Do not make this mistake! When you are working keep your phone in a place that cannot be seen or reached easily. That way you will reduce the need for your phone for a break when working.
4. Sweep Your Room
I really mean this. This is one of the most effective tips to reduce procrastination drastically. Every time I want to analyze Bitcoin charts or study or do research, I start by sweeping my room. The mere thought of performing a huge hard task can be a daunting task for our brain and can trigger procrastination.
So when you break those tasks into small manageable micro tasks, you will be able to achieve them and it will build your momentum to perform the next task. Also, it has been scientifically proven that having a cleaner workplace leads to being more productive and reduces procrastination.
BONUS TIP - WATCH MOTIVATING VIDEOS ( BUT DO NOT OVERINDULGE)
Yes, discipline will take you to places where motivation cannot. But watching a few short motivational videos prior to work does increase the momentum and motivation to do the work, and once you start doing the actual work, procrastination will reduce. Some motivational videos I would suggest are audios of David Goggins or motivating scenes from your favorite movies.
CONCLUSION
Procrastination is a common challenge, but with the right strategies, you can overcome it and become more productive in your personal and professional life.
