5 Lessons From a Tornado
Tragedy strikes every day.
It was my community's turn. A few days ago two tornadoes tore through a small suburb mere kilometers from my home. While all I personally experienced was a long power outage, my community is in shock and is hurting. Many have lost homes and their businesses. It's heartbreaking.
Terrible thing happen all over the world every day, so why do I feel compelled to share this particular tragedy? A tornado in a small suburb of Ottawa?
Quite simply because it touched close to home. And when we have these close encounters they tend to rock us to our core. It served to remind me of how I finally WOKE UP in my life and how this mid-life awakening served to define my life's purpose. While a tornado didn't hit my home, emotionally and mentally I took a ton of hits.
Have you ever had that moment - like the straw that broke the camel's back - and then made massive change? It was a financial "crisis" of sorts with my now ex that was the straw for me. All the years of trying to figure out what really was making me unhappy became crystal clear and that's when I FINALLY made the changes (left my marriage and started my own business....heck - why NOT do both at the same time?!)
So back to the Tornado - 5 Life Lessons I (re) Learned
1. Life's too short - Yeah yeah yeah, it's cliche and we hear it all the time. BECAUSE IT'S TRUE! If you're miserable or dissatisfied - do something! Whether it's your job, your marriage, your weight - do SOMETHING to move the needle. No one wants to regret the things they waited to do or the words they waited to say — unfortunately life doesn’t go by your timing!
2. Savor the little things - Be present with your kids, spouse and loved ones. Enjoy the smell of your kids freshly washed hair. Hold that hug 2 seconds longer even if you are late for work. Love that your kids ramble on and on and on (ok, maybe not that much) about seemingly nothing because if you listen to that hopefully they'll talk to you when they have something important to say.
3. Get tornado insurance - yep - looking into that STAT! I mean, how come that's not covered under regular insurance?
4. Find your purpose - Or use your tragedies to help you question your purpose until you find it. Hardships shake up your thoughts and feelings and make you wonder about your life and your goals — forcing you to pursue a more meaningful life. Use them to fuel you and help you grow, not hold you down.
5. Be thankful - When you learn about tragedies happening to the closest people to you, you start counting your blessings and you become more grateful for the simple things in your life.
What would you add to this list?
With Gratitude (sprinkled with badassery),
