5-Steps to Overcoming Inertia: Jumpstart Your Healthy Habits

You know that all-too-familiar feeling of wanting to start a healthy lifestyle but feeling stuck in a rut? Trust me, you're not alone. We've all been there, staring at our running shoes, contemplating that gym membership, or eyeing that bag of spinach with a mix of determination and hesitation.

But here's the thing: the journey to a healthier you doesn't have to be a daunting mountain to climb. It's about taking that first step, and then another, and another, until you find yourself cruising along the path to wellness.

So, how do you break free from the clutches of inertia and kickstart your journey to a healthier lifestyle?

Let's dive in

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Start small and build momentum. If you are starting from scratch, carving out time for a simple 15-minute workout is a win! Rather than sinking into the couch after dinner, head out the door with the family and get some fresh air on a walk. Small victories pave the way for bigger achievements.
  2. Find Your Why: What motivates you to lead a healthier lifestyle? Want to be a role model for your kids and grandkids? How about avoiding (or getting off) the blood pressure medicine? Whether it's wanting to feel more energized, reducing stress, or simply feeling physically confident, identifying your "why" can provide the fuel you need to push past inertia. Think about the health decisions that the future you would want you to make right now.
  3. Create a Routine: Set aside dedicated time each day for exercise, meal prep, or self-care, and stick to it like glue. Before you know it, these activities will become ingrained in your daily routine. Setting an alarm can be helpful to keep control of your day. I have a routine of waking-up at the same (very early) time on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays, to hit the gym before I go into the office. Are all my workouts great? Definitely not! But the routine is what matters and a mediocre exercise session is better for my longevity and healthspan than no exercise.
  4. Find Support: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who uplift and inspire you on your journey. Whether it's joining a fitness class, partnering up with a workout buddy, or seeking guidance from a health coach, having a support system can make all the difference. We can all use a nudge to keep us on track, and sooner or later someone will look to you for support on their journey.
  5. Celebrate the Process, Not Perfection: Remember, nobody's journey to a healthier lifestyle is perfect. Embrace the ups and downs, celebrate your progress, and don't be too hard on yourself when things don't go according to plan. Every step forward, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction.

The hardest, yet most important step you can take, is the first one. The first minute of the exercise session is the most difficult. You just have to start.

So lace up those sneakers, grab that water bottle, and embark on your journey to a healthier, happier you. The future you will love you for it!

You've got this!

Cheers.
