6 Key Differences Between the VM600Mk2 and Its Predecessor

Introducing the VM600Mk2

Meggitt Vibro-meter recently introduced the VM600Mk2 — the second generation of its trusted VM600 machine protection and condition monitoring system. Over 20 years after the original release, this upgrade brings major advancements in performance, cybersecurity, and usability.

In this article, we outline the six most important differences between the original VM600 and the new VM600Mk2.

1. Integrated Protection and Monitoring

The VM600Mk2 integrates protection and condition monitoring using the new MPC4Mk2 and I/O modules — eliminating the need for a separate XMV16 module.

Benefits of this integration include:

  • Perfect synchronization between alarms and monitoring data

  • Faster configuration — shared elements are no longer duplicated

  • Flexible use: the XMV16 can still be used stand-alone for monitoring, even with third-party protection systems

  • Full compatibility with VibroSight® software

2. SIL 2 by Design

The MPC4Mk2 and RLC16Mk2 modules are designed from the ground up for SIL 2 compliance. This is a step forward from the previous VM600, which earned SIL 2 certification only after years of use.

3. Improved Relay Capabilities

The VM600Mk2’s relays bring key improvements:

  • Epoxy-sealed relays for better environmental protection

  • Five relays on the MPC4Mk2 (vs. four previously) — the fifth is dedicated to fault indication

  • NO and NC positions now available from each SPDT relay

  • Relay logic configurable via software, removing the need for hardware jumpers

4. Cybersecurity Reinvented

Protection and monitoring functions are now strictly separated within the MPC4Mk2. A failure in monitoring cannot impact protective functions.

Additional cybersecurity features:

  • Separate software environments for configuration

  • Secure data sharing between protection and monitoring

  • Physical module locks and password protection for added security

5. New Configuration Software

A redesigned configuration environment offers:

  • Full graphical overview of rack layout, modules, and system setup

  • Significantly faster setup and adjustments

  • A more intuitive user experience

6. Simplicity and Versatility

The VM600Mk2 remains simple — and more flexible:

  • Fewer module types for a more streamlined system

  • The MPC4Mk2's five relays reduce the need for an RLC16Mk2

  • Integrated monitoring and protection reduce hardware needs

  • Modular design ensures adaptability to various setups
