7 Lessons Learned from Cold Plunging for 30 Consecutive Days
For one month last year, I committed to a daily cold plunge. Thirty straight days of stepping into freezing water first thing in the morning. It wasn’t easy, but the benefits? Undeniable.
Here’s what I learned:
1️⃣ The Power of Routine
Success is built on consistency. Doing something every single day—no matter how uncomfortable—turns it into a habit. Over time, what once felt impossible becomes automatic.
2️⃣ Eat That Frog
Tackling the hardest thing first thing in the morning makes everything else seem easy in comparison. If you can willingly jump into ice-cold water at dawn, sending that tough email or making that difficult call doesn’t seem so bad.
3️⃣ The Dopamine Hit
Cold plunging delivers an incredible rush of dopamine that lasts far longer than the quick hits we get from caffeine, social media, or even intense exercise. It’s a natural, sustained mood booster.
4️⃣ The Power of a Goal
Setting a goal and seeing it through is one of the most rewarding experiences. It’s a daily reminder that discipline trumps motivation—because trust me, motivation isn’t getting you into that water at 6 AM.
5️⃣ Increased Energy & Mental Clarity
I expected the shock of cold water to wake me up, but I didn’t expect the sustained energy boost throughout the day. I felt sharper, more alert, and less reliant on caffeine to stay productive.
6️⃣ Laser Focus
The moment you step into freezing water, your mind has two choices: panic or focus. At first, all I could think about was the cold. But after a few days, I learned to control my breathing, slow my thoughts, and embrace the discomfort. That ability to dial in and stay present has carried over into my work—fewer distractions, deeper concentration, and an overall sense of control over my mindset. Cold plunging isn’t just physical; it’s mental training.
7️⃣ Mind Over Matter
The first few plunges were brutal. Every nerve screamed, telling me to get out. But by the end of the challenge, I barely thought about the cold—it became just another part of my routine. The lesson? Most limits exist in your mind. When you learn to push past discomfort, you realize you’re capable of far more than you thought.
Shoutout to those who inspired me to take the plunge: CJ Stam III, David Angotti, Brady Stump. Who’s next?
Would love to hear from anyone else who’s tried this—what was your biggest takeaway?

5moCold-plunging in the morning or after a stressful day is the name of my game, although I hit pause from end of November until now because I prefer the river or the lake when I can. I actually crave it! This is a great read!
