7 Things Nobody Tells You About Moving to Florida (But You’ll Be Glad You Know)
So, you’re thinking about making the move to Florida? Welcome to sunshine, sandals, and a slower pace of life. But before you load up the moving truck and hit I-75 South, let’s talk about a few things nobody tells you—but absolutely should—before relocating to the Sunshine State.
Whether you're coming from New York, California, or just a few hours north, this quick list will help you settle in like a seasoned local.
1. There Are 3 Seasons: Hot, Hotter, and Hurricane
July and August? They’re not for the faint of heart. Florida heat is no joke, and neither is the humidity. But once you learn the rhythm—morning errands, afternoon A/C, and evening beach breezes—you’ll adjust fast. Oh, and yes, hurricane season runs from June to November… but Floridians don’t panic—we prepare.
2. Flip Flops Are Formal Wear
Seriously. Unless you’re in court or a wedding, you’re probably okay in sandals. Want to blend in? Toss those snow boots and stock up on Reef, Rainbow, or Sanuk. You’ll be glad you did.
3. You Might Become a Boater (Even If You’ve Never Touched a Paddle)
There’s something about being surrounded by water that turns even land-lovers into weekend captains. Paddleboarding, kayaking, or cruising—water is a huge part of the lifestyle here. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself pricing out pontoon boats by month two.
4. HOA Life Is Big Here (And Not All Are Created Equal)
From Mirabay to Waterset, many Florida neighborhoods have HOAs—and they vary a lot. Some cover lawn care, cable, even flood insurance. Some just enforce rules on paint color. Be sure you understand what you’re paying for. It can make a big difference in your budget and lifestyle.
5. You'll Need to Pick a Side: Publix or Winn-Dixie
Publix is basically a Florida cult, and for good reason. But don’t count out Winn-Dixie or even Aldi—they all have loyal fans. Just try not to judge us too hard when we rave about chicken tender subs like they’re gourmet cuisine.
6. You’ll Meet More Neighbors Than You Expect
People talk here. They wave. They invite you to golf cart parades and Friday night food trucks. If you’re coming from somewhere less social, it might surprise you—but in the best way.
7. You Might Wonder Why You Didn’t Do This Sooner
The sunsets. The outdoor living. The way life just feels a little lighter. Florida isn’t perfect (no place is), but for a lot of us who made the move… it sure feels close.

I did it—and I’ve helped hundreds of families do it too. Whether you're just starting your search or ready to make a move, I’d love to help you settle into your own slice of paradise.
