9 Mindset Shifts That Are Holding You Back (And How to Overcome Them)

9 Mindset Shifts That Are Holding You Back (And How to Overcome Them)

In today's fast-paced world, it’s easy to get stuck in unproductive habits. However, success often depends on adopting the right mindset. Here are nine mindset shifts that, if corrected, can lead to significant improvements in your life.

1. Instant Gratification vs. Delayed Gratification

If something you want is a small purchase, give yourself a week to think about it. Even after the time period it feels necessary, go for it.. For bigger decisions, allow about three months. If, after that time, it still feels essential, go for it.

2. Neglecting Self-Care

Prioritize taking care of your body, mind, and finances:

  • Work out
  • Meditate
  • Read books
  • Spend time with positive people
  • Eat nutritious food

Neglecting self-care will eventually cause even your finances to fall apart. If minded these things in the end the finances will automatically come in your hand.

3. Spending More Time on Firefighting Instead of Planning

Follow the Eisenhower Matrix:

The Eisenhower Matrix

4th Quadrant (Not Important, Not Urgent): Delete it.

Example: A movie releases today — do you really need to watch it today? No, watching it later won’t change your life.

3rd Quadrant (Not Important, Urgent): Delegate it.

Example: Paying a utility bill. Assign it to someone else or pay someone to handle it for you.

1st Quadrant (Urgent and Important): Focus on these tasks immediately.

Example: If you’re at risk of a heart attack and your doctor suggests exercise, it’s urgent and important. However, we often get caught up in firefighting and neglect crucial tasks like this.

2nd Quadrant (Not Urgent, But Important):

This is where you should spend most of your time — on finances, wealth creation, relationships, and health.

  • Spending time with your kids? Not urgent, but crucial for their growth.
  • Working out today? Not urgent, but consistent exercise will benefit you in 10 years.
  • Financial discipline today? It may not seem urgent, but it will lead to wealth over time.

Prioritize spending more time here, rather than in the other quadrants.

4. Not Investing in Your Own Growth

Wealthy individuals invest in themselves, especially their mindset. They read books, attend events, spend money to meet the right people, and focus on self-improvement. The more time and effort you invest in yourself, the better the results.

"Improve yourself, and your surroundings will automatically improve."

People with a "broke mindset" hesitate to invest in self-growth.

Example: If you suggest spending ₹500 on a book, they might say, “Who would spend on that?” To achieve wealth, you need to overcome this mindset.

5. Procrastination

Example: A dog is crying. When asked why, the owner says it’s because the dog is sitting on a nail. When questioned why the dog doesn’t move, the owner responds, “It’s not painful enough to move.”

We procrastinate even though it’s painful, but it doesn’t hurt enough to change our behavior.

Do you want to be like the crying dog, or will you take action today?

"The more you procrastinate, the more pain you’ll experience in your life."

The pain of doing a task is far less than the pain of avoiding it.

6. Being Aware of Patterns and Changing Them

There are success patterns and failure patterns.

Is your pattern self-destructive or self-constructive?

Identify whether your habits serve or sabotage you. If you recognize a negative pattern, break out of it.

7. Not Listening to People Who Have Achieved What You Want

Seek out people who are already where you want to be. Listen to what they have to say and apply their advice. Don’t ignore their wisdom — they’ve already walked the path you’re aiming for.

8. Not Knowing Where You’re Going in Life

The main reason people don’t achieve their goals is that they don’t know where they’re heading.

Set clear goals not just to achieve something, but to give your life direction.

Without goals, your life will lack direction and become stagnant.

If you want direction in your life, start by setting goals.

9. Consuming Negative Content

Constantly consuming negative content will influence your mindset.

Example: If you frequently watch scam-related videos or negative news, you’ll eventually attract negativity into your life.

You are the result of the content you consume

How to Consume Good Content?

It’s better to consume long-form content like YouTube videos, blogs, or newsletters than short, attention-grabbing content like Instagram reels or Facebook posts.

Instead of watching 60 reels in 60 minutes and comparing yourself to others, watch one long-form video that provides value and depth.

If the content isn’t helpful, hopeful, or doesn’t promote healing, don’t consume it.
