ABCs of Learning: A Visual Vocabulary

As a teacher with over nine years of experience leading a Writing Center and working at the CIPL at King's College , I've dedicated my efforts to enhancing teaching practices. Through organizing bi-monthly faculty development workshops and monthly Empowering Hours events for nearly two years, I've observed a recurring theme: many teachers lack a shared vocabulary about learning.

This realization coincided with a personal milestone—teaching my toddler the ABCs. While creating flashcards for her, it struck me that teachers, too, could benefit from an "ABCs" framework specifically tailored to the science of learning.

Motivated by this insight, I compiled a list of key concepts from A to Z, delving into books, articles, and research to refine each term. After drafting my version, I sought assistance from ChatGPT to enhance the content. Utilizing Canva, I designed flashcards featuring icons and concise definitions for each concept.

The "ABCs of Science of Learning" aims to provide both teachers and students with a foundational vocabulary to better understand and engage with the learning process. While each letter offers a brief definition, I encourage further exploration and research to deepen comprehension of these concepts.

By fostering a common language around learning, we can empower educators and learners alike to navigate the educational journey more effectively.

I am grateful to the researchers, professors, and scientists who have dedicated their lives to exploring these concepts and enhancing the quality in education in true sense.
