AI Agent Applications in Supply Chain Management for Dynamics 365

AI is everywhere. But while enterprise tech providers rush to provide flashy AI-powered solutions/platforms, do they generate true value for consumers?

In our LinkedIn Live webinar, Beyond SaaS: How AI Agents Are Taking Over Enterprise Tech, experts – Sameer Verma, General Manager & Head of AI and ERP at Microsoft, and Michiel Toppers, Senior Director of Products at STAEDEAN, cut through the hype and share the true picture.

Integrating AI agents into enterprise technology is more than just a trend. It can significantly transform how businesses leverage their enterprise tech to simplify operations and make smarter business decisions. Our experts dive into Microsoft’s AI strategy and how it will shape its tech stack and revolutionize ERP tech. If you are one of the 75% businesses planning to replace your legacy ERP system (Source: IDC) with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management (D365 F&SCM), or already a superuser – this blog will help you understand how you can leverage the potential of AI agents and Copilot to the highest potential.

Microsoft’s AI Strategy for Enterprise Technology

With the introduction of the first wave of AI agents in Dynamics 365 in April 2025, Microsoft is reshaping supply chain operations. Traditional ERP systems often rely on manual intervention and rule-based automation. Microsoft's approach introduces three key differentiators:

  • Copilots and AI Agents: In Microsoft's ERP ecosystem, Copilot serves as an interface for users, while AI agents handle the underlying logic working in a synchronous partnership. AI agents operate in the background round-the-clock, notifying users of completed tasks, highlighting areas needing attention, and suggesting next steps.

  • Adaptive Experience: Recognizing both excitement and apprehension around AI, Microsoft is implementing semi-autonomous scenarios to build user trust and ensure transparency.

  • Dynamic Workflows: By introducing dynamic workflows, Microsoft aims to streamline end-to-end business processes. For instance, classic workflows like source-to-pay, record-to-report, and plan-to-produce can be enhanced through AI agents automating and streamlining an entire business process.

These innovations offer several benefits:

  • Proactive Assistance: AI agents analyze data patterns, anticipate needs, and recommend actions.

  • Enhanced Efficiency: By automating workflows and adjusting processes based on real-time data, operations become more efficient.

  • Improved Decision-Making: AI-driven insights enable businesses to make informed, strategic decisions swiftly.

But can you take advantage of these opportunities presented by Microsoft’s AI agents? Not if you have dirty data in your system. To harness the potential of AI, you need to look inward first – at your data.

Data Maturity for AI-readiness

The effectiveness of AI is heavily dependent on the quality of data. As the saying goes, "Garbage in is garbage out." Even advanced AI models can produce misleading insights if the underlying data is inaccurate and inconsistent. Organizations must ensure they have structured, clean, and integrated data pipelines, along with robust master data management processes and tools, to maximize the potential of Microsoft’s AI Agents and Copilot.

STAEDEAN's no-code embedded Data Management Solutions assist enterprises in achieving AI-ready data by providing solutions for Data Integration & Security and Master Data Management for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management.

AI Agent Applications in Supply Chain Management for Dynamics 365

In the design phase of the AI Agents, Microsoft’s focus was to zoom in on end-to-end processes that require multiple departments to collaborate. In 2024, Microsoft released about 30 Copilots within the Microsoft tech stack. The learnings from the interactions with these AI programs shaped the next wave of AI agents. Sameer revealed that Microsoft has launched their first supplier collaboration agent in D365 F&SCM, available for public preview in April 2025. The supply chain agent can help users:

  • Enhance Supplier Collaboration: Automate procurement tasks, reduce manual follow-up, and share actionable improvements.

  • Accelerate Decision-Making: Provide proposals to mitigate supply chain challenges for quick approval.

  • Increase Resilience: Assess the impact of supply delays and suggest corrective actions.

Embracing Autonomous AI-Powered ERP

The long-term goal of Microsoft’s AI strategy is to blur the distinction between Microsoft's tech stack and create a truly autonomous ERP system. For instance, obtaining approvals or processing expense reports is now possible directly within Microsoft Teams, without accessing the ERP system.

With a powerful AI strategy to back Microsoft, it is developing an autonomous, AI-driven ERP for industry leaders. However, without clean and well-governed data management processes within D365 F&SCM, organizations will be unable to automate processes and leverage AI-driven insights. The partnership between Microsoft and STAEDEAN offers businesses the tools to streamline operations, reduce inefficiencies, automate processes, and enhance decision-making.
