AI Answers a Call for Help in Detecting Cancer Earlier
Pathology got its start back in the tenth or eleventh century, as doctors used lenses to better understand what was happening in body tissue. The field advanced significantly in the 1800s when the microscope was born, allowing pathologists to gain a true picture of the tiny structures inside our bodies.
Fast forward to the late 2010s, pathologists still relied on this glass-in-tube technology for identifying abnormalities in cells. However, two entrepreneurs decided to change that: Joseph (Yossi) Mossel and Chaim Linhart founded Ibex Medical Analytics .
With more people needing services every year and fewer professionals working in the field, pathologists were being stretched thin. Mossel (CEO) and Linhart (CTO) noticed there was a “building shift to digitalize pathology.” The pair sprung at the opportunity to build a company that used AI for more accurate cancer cell detection and therefore more timely cancer diagnoses to patients.
In a conversation with Mossel, we learned how the company trained its platform to become a digital assistant for overworked pathology teams. Having earned "Breakthrough Device Designation" by the U.S. FDA in 2021, Ibex's AI technology is the most widely deployed AI solution in pathology. Ibex is working toward a larger goal to transform cancer diagnosis, and they are on a tireless quest to expand their technology to new tissue types and drive new prognostic and predictive insights.
