AI Metrics That Matter in a Human-Centered, AI-Augmented Implementation

As a LinkedIn Editorial Top Voice, thought leader, author, educator, strategy facilitator, and training practitioner, I write a weekly article that benefits existing and emerging leaders who aim to improve their organizations significantly.

Tracking AI Implementation

We are advancing a framework for collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on crucial metrics that support a human-centered, AI-enhanced implementation. The metrics monitored should indicate improvements in human capabilities as well as the broader effects on individuals and business results. This strategy goes beyond conventional efficiency measures to explore qualitative and behavioral impacts.

AI will be an integral part of solving the world’s biggest problems, but it must be developed in a way that reflects human values. – Satya Nadella

AI Human-Centered and Augmentation-Focused Metrics

When utilizing AI through a human-centered and augmentation-focused set of values, companies should prioritize metrics that showcase AI's enhancement of human abilities, support of collaboration, and fostering of well-being for employees and customers. Below are key metrics that businesses should track, arranged for clarity:

  1. Cognitive load – Cognitive load reduction evaluates the amount of time employees gain when AI reduces mentally taxing work and repetitive tasks.

  2. Business outcomes – The recording of the impact on service quality, the number of new ideas generated, the amount of time spent on innovation, and revenue per augmented employee.

  3. Employee experience – The workforce is monitored for their level of adoption and usage of AI, engagement, morale, psychological safety, satisfaction, and participation in upskilling and reskilling.

  4. Ethical responsibility – Regular review of actionable explanations, AI comprehensibility, bias detection rates, clear accountability, equitable outcomes, and human oversight effectiveness.

  5. Human performance enhancement – Measurement of the preservation and enhancement of human creativity, decision-making quality, innovation, and productivity gains.

  6. Organizational learning and adaptability – Tracking the rate of feedback loop efficiency, knowledge transfer, and learning curve duration.

  7. Task augmentation balance – Measuring the level of task allocation efficiency of task distribution between humans and AI.

These metrics build on the traditional emphasis on efficiency and cost-cutting. By tracking the impact on the human element of implementation, the organization will achieve greater employee buy-in and engagement, resulting in more significant outcomes for all stakeholders.

Measurement Considerations

The set of tracking metrics should ensure that AI truly serves to augment human capabilities, considering:

  1. Baseline established – Before implementing AI, it is essential to define the current state of AI to track the gains in technological adoption accurately.

  2. Combining qualitative and quantitative data – This mix of data types enhances the understanding of the human experience, providing insights into the "Why" behind the numbers and the findings from stakeholder focus groups, interviews, and surveys.

  3. Context-specific metrics – The metrics should be customized to fit an organization’s distinct industry requirements, the nature of the AI application, and the roles of humans being augmented.

  4. Iterative monitoring – The implementation of AI should be continually assessed to determine when the strategy needs to be adapted to align with evolving understanding and to address changes in internal and external forces.

A comprehensive approach to collecting, assessing, and reporting data will provide the most robust understanding of the impact of a human-centered, AI-augmented implementation.

Key Takeaways

A human-centered, augmentative AI strategy requires monitoring both quantitative and qualitative metrics to understand how AI enhances, rather than replaces, human work. The emphasis should be on productivity, decision quality, creativity, employee and customer satisfaction, fairness, and ethical utilization, ensuring that AI acts as a collaborative partner that strengthens human capabilities.

First Step

Leaders should ensure a thorough understanding of the types of metrics needed to educate those involved in implementing AI within their organizations, enabling them to do so efficiently and effectively. Developing a comprehensive understanding of the organization's current state will help foster higher levels of stakeholder engagement and trust. This will be strengthened by involving relevant stakeholders throughout the development of the metrics.

My Gratitude

I have a deep appreciation for individuals with the analytical skills to evaluate both qualitative and quantitative data and interpret it meaningfully, which genuinely enhances the execution of an improvement initiative. Some people can crunch the numbers, while others understand their workplace, but few can combine both to achieve a more significant outcome.
