Is AI a more concerning threat than Ransomware? What Security Leaders Told Arctic Wolf

The past 12 months have been nothing short of eventful for cybersecurity leaders. Not only have threat actors continued to target organizations around the globe with favored tactics such as ransomware and business email compromise (BEC), there’s been a sea change in the cyber landscape as the regulatory climate continues to shapeshift, AI technologies become more widely adopted by both organizations and cyber criminals alike, and large-scale breaches continue to grow in both volume and impact.

Knowledge can be power in this constantly evolving landscape, and Arctic Wolf’s State of Cybersecurity: 2025 Trends Report provides both hindsight and insights from security leaders as they share experiences over the past year and perspectives on the issues shaping the future of IT and security.

Our research revealed that:

  • While ransomware may make headlines, it’s AI that’s keeping security leaders up at night

  • Organizations are taking a “when, not if” approach to incidents, opting to invest in more incident response planning

  • triple threat of legacy tools, visibility gaps, and budget constraints are hindering the impact of previous security investments

Learn more about what security leaders are most concerned about, what they’re investing in, and how they plan to stop future threats with The State of Cybersecurity: 2025 Trends Report. Interesting article. AI is really making it a easier for larger scale attacks. Ransomware is really something to be scared of, but we have ways to be proactive about it and recover, who knows what kind of damage an AI driven attack could cause.

Spot on. 👏 We’re seeing AI shift from a support tool to a threat vector, faster than many security programs are built to handle. The move toward proactive incident response planning is a smart one, but it needs to be paired with better visibility and smarter tooling to stay ahead of these evolving threats. AI to fight AI is becoming a mantra. Thanks Arctic Wolf for continuing to provide clear, actionable insights. This report will definitely be part of our client conversations.

This article seems to nail the key concern for security leaders. Ransomware is a familiar battle, but defending against autonomous agentic AI that can orchestrate its own complex attacks is a much more daunting and unpredictable future threat.

Arctic Wolf thr collab with Anthropic is very exciting news as the potential advantages of scale and speed to detect and take actions to remediate threats. This efforts should still go in parallel with improving the SOC human and AI-powered intel. First organizations and security teams must feel comfortable with the results of AI driven intel and actions before letting AI lose to surveil, detect, take actions and communicate without human oversight.
