AI news and funding updates from the last 24 hours(14th July 2025)

Apple

Apple is reportedly considering the acquisition of Mistral AI , Europe's largest AI startup valued at over $6 billion, to bolster its own struggling AI efforts. The potential move comes as Apple faces criticism, the departure of key AI talent, and a significant delay in upgrading its virtual assistant, Siri, until 2026. Acquiring Mistral, known for its successful language models and chatbot 'Le Chat', could provide a much-needed boost. This follows previous reports of Apple's interest in buying another AI startup, Perplexity. The potential deal highlights Apple's strategy to leverage external expertise to improve its AI capabilities.

Siemens

The CEOs of German tech giants Siemens and SAP are urging the European Union to revise its artificial intelligence legislation. They argue that the current EU AI Act, with its risk categories and overlapping rules, stifles innovation and causes Europe to lag behind. Siemens CEO Roland Busch also called the EU's Data Act "toxic" for developing new digital business models. Rather than simply investing in infrastructure, both leaders stress the need to reform data laws first. They believe the main obstacle is not a lack of computing power, but restrictive rules preventing access to Europe's "treasure trove of data."

Tesla

Elon Musk has publicly stated he does not support a merger between his electric car company, Tesla , and his artificial intelligence startup, xAI . He confirmed this stance with a direct "No" in response to a user's question on his social media platform, X . This clarification comes after he previously considered asking Tesla shareholders to vote on the company investing in the AI firm. The AI startup, which owns the Grok chatbot and acquired X, has seen its valuation talks reportedly exceed $120 billion. Furthermore, Musk's other company, SpaceX , has reportedly committed $2 billion to xAI.

Other News

Malaysia's trade ministry has implemented an immediate permit requirement for the export, transshipment, and transit of high-performance AI chips from the U.S. The move comes amid pressure from the United States to prevent these advanced semiconductors from reaching China. This new rule is intended to close regulatory gaps, with companies now needing to provide 30 days' notice or face legal action.

Australian scientists have developed PROTEUS, a "biological artificial intelligence" system that rapidly evolves new proteins directly inside mammalian cells. This open-source platform mimics natural selection to solve complex biological problems, reducing development timelines from years to just weeks. It operates by presenting a challenge, like turning off a disease gene, and lets the cell's machinery evolve an optimal molecular solution. The technology has already improved gene-editing tools like CRISPR and created nanobodies to detect DNA damage. PROTEUS promises to revolutionize precision medicine and gene therapy by accelerating the design of highly effective treatments.
