Abstract

The article provides a brief description of the architecture of ONAP and its contribution to 5G technology. Let’s discuss how Amdocs manages ONAP and why it is ahead of its competitors next.

ONAP architecture

NFV and SDN did not capitalize on the market as expected, which led to brainstorming among NFV/ SDN supporters. The traditional approach increased the cost of development, maintenance, and constant updating of the code of patent NFV/SDN products. To include a new VNF was a lengthy and costly process, having a high dependency on the vendors. NFV/SDN lacked standard automation of the infrastructure and flexibility to roll out virtualization. The solution to both the problems was ONAP, an open-source approach. It is an Open Network Automation Platform, a software that provides various powerful resources for designing, creating, orchestrating, monitoring, and maintaining NFV and SDN environments' lifelong management.

ONAP allows the user organization and its network provider to jointly initiate elements and services of the network dynamically and rapidly. The closed control loop process helps to generate a real-time response for events that results in actions. It decouples the specific service details and related technologies from generic management engines, core orchestration platforms, and general information models. ONAP platform enables resource independent capabilities and services to design, create, and manage the lifecycle.

ONAP contribution to the 5G implementation

ONAP and 5G are two crucial pieces of a puzzle. The end-to-end network slicing capabilities of ONAP will be a game-changer for 5G. It is the ultimate standard that has been set for an end-to-end network management system, a crucial fact for 5G. It provides a comprehensive solution to facilitate slicing of the network as a critical embedded capability of 5G, and it thereby supports the current and future network use cases. ONAP is active in developing distributed analytics and network management enhancements capabilities necessary to enable 5G technology.

Amdocs’s management of ONAP

With the subsequent release from Amsterdam 1.0, Beijing 2.0, Casablanca 3.0, Dublin 4.0 to El Alto 5.0, the effectiveness of ONAP has increased over time.

Amdocs, as co-creator of ECOMP, an open-source code, is the foundation of ONAP. It helps to bring out a holistic production-proven software. The company plays a crucial role as a founding member for ONAP. It helps the early adopters to operationalize ONAP by giving a unique insight into the in-depth technical knowledge. It helps the customers to adapt to the new technology faster.

The reason why Amdocs is ahead of its competitors

Amdocs is ahead of its competitors because it has worked with various Telecom providers. It provides them with complete support to deploy ONAP, integrates the new technology into their networks, and re-launches the unique services of NFV. It provides an all-inclusive software and the services that range across planning, fulfilment, and service assurance to help the transformation of ONAP. The extensive experience in deploying ONAP, Amdocs has developed best practices to accelerate the integration of ONAP in a hybrid network. Amdocs is committed to the open-source community of ONAP and continues to be a pivotal contributor to the code and strategy.
