Allow Your Image Do The Talking

Allow Your Image Do The Talking

The moment I walked through the gate, my eyes widened. A multitude faced me.

For a moment, I froze.

Backstory: On Tuesday, I found myself at the NIMC (National Identity Management Commission) office to sort out my NIN (National Identity Number).

The security guard noticed and asked, Madam, I hope there is no problem?

I pointed at the crowd and asked, Are all these people here for NIN-related issues as well?

He laughed loudly and said haba, people no too plenty today na (This crowd is not so bad today).

Not so bad? I thought. If this was not so bad, I was in trouble.

In my head, I was already thinking of how to get in there without spending the whole day.

Thankfully, I hadn’t exactly dressed like someone running errands. I looked like I was headed to the airport to catch an international flight:

  • Well put together
  • Subtle but noticeable accessories
  • A calm, confident posture

I walked up confidently, found my way close to the front, and stood near the door.

After a few minutes, one of the officials looked at me and said, Madam, what’s your issue?

I greeted him respectfully and explained my needs calmly. He listened, nodded, and then waved me inside. Just like that, the first hurdle was crossed.

That moment reminded me of something important, your personal brand is always speaking, even before you say a word.

The Personal Branding Lessons Hiding in This Story

  • Image Matters People often say Don’t judge a book by its cover, but the truth is, most people do. The way you present yourself can open doors or keep them shut. Your appearance is part of your brand. Make it intentional.
  • Positioning Counts Standing in the right place (literally or figuratively) increases your chances of being noticed. I didn’t hide at the back; I positioned myself where decisions were being made.
  • Your Brand Voice Sets the Tone When I spoke to the official, I was polite, articulate, and clear. Your choice of words and tone can either create resistance or invite cooperation.
  • Clarity Wins I didn’t give a long, confusing story. I clearly stated what I needed, making it easier for him to help me.

Every day, whether in business or life, you’re being read before you even open your mouth. Your clothes, your posture, your tone, your choice of words, they’re all telling a story.

The question is, Is your personal brand telling the right one?

PS: Have you ever been treated differently just because of the way you presented yourself, positively or negatively?

That saying, "don't judge a book by its cover" needs to be relegated for now. I'd go with "dress the way you want to be addressed." You cannot want the part without looking the part. I love how this experience came with branding lessons that you shared here. Have an amazing weekend Simi Abok
