"A.P.E.M. of a Casualty"

A.P.E.M., Appraisal. Planning. Execution. Monitoring. (Sounds like a Navy SEAL mission, doesn’t it?). The OG, classic four-step approach to Passage Planning, tweaked for Casualty Management.

Its 2025, it’s a bit more digital, a little more collaborative, and let’s be honest — sometimes even done from a sofa (if the WiFi holds up).


🔍 A — APPRAISAL (a.k.a. “What Just Happened?!”)

Back in the day, you'd squint at a grainy fax and rely on third-hand info: “Vessel sideways, cargo swimming, more info to follow.”

Now? We’ve got satellite tracking, drone photos, and WhatsApp updates from the bridge: “All fine. Mostly. Also, who’s sending snacks?”

Today’s appraisal is about connecting the digital dots. Sensors, shipboard data, and (sometimes) the intern who actually knows how to work the software.


🧭 P — PLANNING (a.k.a. “Round up the Usual Suspects”)

This is where the emails fly and Zoom calls multiply. Someone always says, “Let’s not panic.” Translation: We’re definitely panicking, but trying to look professional.

Planning means bridging departments, time zones, and expectations—while trying to remember where you saved the ERP file.

Pro tip: Use the whiteboard. People trust the whiteboard.


🚨 E — EXECUTION (a.k.a. “No, Seriously, Who’s in Charge?”)

Execution is the moment everyone’s grand ideas hit the salty, unpredictable reality of ship life.

Back then: ✔ Print the checklist ✔ Read the manual ✔ Hope for the best

Now: ✔ Share the drone feed ✔ Update the digital log ✔ Say "as per protocol" until it feels true

Meanwhile, salvors, insurers, lawyers, and cargo owners all want updates—usually by 9 a.m., in three formats. Someone always suggests, “Just offload with a crane.” Sure. From where? Amazon?


📈 M — MONITORING (a.k.a. “Refresh Email, Repeat”)

This is where you watch, wait, adjust, and answer 47 slightly different questions from 12 different stakeholders — all asking if “the ship is okay now.”

This phase is equal parts data and diplomacy.

Monitoring today means tracking telemetry, weather, vessel stability, and internal inbox survival. Everyone’s watching the same dashboards but interpreting them very differently.

Also, your phone now buzzes whenever the ship leans 0.3° or the AI thinks it blinks.


♻️ Bonus Round: It’s Not Linear

Here’s the truth: A.P.E.M. is less a straight path, more a merry-go-round. You plan, execute, realize it’s the wrong plan, go back to appraisal, replan, and carry on like a professional — because that’s what we do.

Modern casualty handling is flexible, iterative, and often done in jogging pants.

Casualty response isn’t getting simpler, but it is getting smarter. Whether you're on deck or dialled in from a cafe, the A.P.E.M. spirit lives on — only now with cloud storage and shared spreadsheets.

And that’s the beauty of A.P.E.M. still holding strong, just with a better signal and slightly fewer faxes.
